Following a notification by the State government inviting suggestions or objections to the Panaji Municipal Corporation, Penha-da-Franca Sarpanch Umesh Phadte convened a special panchayat meeting recently to discuss the issue.
The panchayat objected to the proposed inclusion of the Penha-da-Franca village on grounds that the merger would deprive villagers of the benefits of the RDA scheme, while there would be a substantial hike in house tax which would be beyond the capacity of the common man.
The panchayat members also noted that people of the village would be forced to travel to Panjim even for petty matters.The panchayat later forwarded its written objections to the government.
Meanwhile, the Nehrunagar Residents Association, Krantinagar Housing Association and Pundaliknagar Welfare Association have adopted similar resolutions, objecting to the merger of Penha-da-Franca village with the Panaji Municipal Corporation. Residents of Britona, Halliwada, Betim and Malim have already begun a signature campaign to oppose the merger. ----------------------- Herald 3/03/03 ----------------------
