PLAN TO TACKLE OPA WATER CRISIS: The government has undertaken an ambitious plan of laying an 11-km long MS pipeline from Selaulim to Kalay river at a cost of about Rs.11 crore to augment water supply to water works in view of the anticipated water crisis in North Goa from 15 May onwards. Tiswadi and Ponda talukas are expected to experience water shortage to some extent from mid-May onwards and the government has initiated steps to counter the situation. (GT)
DELIMITATION: IT'S ADVANTAGE BJP: As per the draft proposals of the Delimitation Commission, North Goa is to have 23 assembly constituencies and South Goa 17 instead of 19 and 21 respectively even as the delimitation is reorganizing all the constituencies except Panjim, Margao and Fatorda. Mormugao taluka will have four segments instead of three. The new one proposed to be carved out is New Vaddem. In Bardez, a new constituency called Penha-da-Franca is being created stretching from Britona to Ucassaim and includes Salvador do Mundo, Socorro and parts of Pomburpa. Tivim has been merged with Aldona and the new segment is called Tivim-Aldona. It will tentatively consist of Sirsaim, Colvale, Aldona and Moira besides Tivim. (H)
FALEIRO CALLS FOR RE-NOMINATION: Former Chief Minister and Navelim MLA, Luizinho Faleiro, has petitioned the chairman of the Delimitation Commission alleging that the Goa legislative assembly Speaker Vishwas Satarkar's action of nominating four MLAs from the BJP and one from the Congress as associate members to the Delimitation Commission, as "patently illegal" and in total contravention of the Delimitation Act. CARNIVAL CELEBRATIONS IN MAPUSA: King and Queen Momo ushered in Carnival celebrations in Mapusa on March 4 as 63 floats paraded down the Mapusa streets in a riot of colour, costume, music and dance. Among the weird and the comical, some floats propounded lofty themes: AIDS Helpline 1097 by Nishta, Protect Animals and World Peace were prominent. One traditional float of St Estevam depicted Goan farmers in "kashtti" with local vegetables. Another one by "Uskoichim Abolim", depicted a traditional Goan wedding. In the commercial category, the bikes, beers, liquors and even milk were represented. A huge black scorpion and long crocodile were eye-catching among the floats of birds and animals. The chairperson of the Panjim Municipal Council, Mr Ashok Naik with other councilors, led his float exhorting people to "join hands to revive the charm of Panjim". (NT)
FIVE HELD FOR ASSAULT: The Panaji police on March 4 arrested five youth for assaulting 21-year-old Mr Francis Fernandes from Chimbel on Carnival Day. (NT)
NO-TRUST AGAINST SHASHIKALA: A meeting of the MGP central committee holds intrigue as a no-confidence motion against party president Shashikala Kakodkar is scheduled to be taken up today (March 5). Nine out of 15 members have signed the notice and they appear firm on a change in the party leadership. (GT)
POWER FROM GARBAGE: Generating electricity from Sonsodo dump? The idea seems unbelievable but can become a reality if the proposal of the Pune-based Mailhem Engineers materializes. The firm, which gave a presentation during a seminar on "Clean and Green Goa", would submit its proposal by Mach 10 to the Margao Municipal Council. (NT)
"BE INNOVATIVE": Education imparted in a university must enable students to imbibe three inseparable ingredients of knowledge, skill and sensitivity in a self-consistent manner to help them make meaningful contributions to society. Saying so, Atomic Energy commission chairman Dr Anil Kakodkar urged young graduates from Goa University to train their heads and hands to work synergistically to produce innovations. He stressed the urgency in reorienting the higher education system in the country to a means to empowerment of students not only to be able to manage themselves but also to make significant contributions society on the basis of what they have learnt. Dr Kakodkar was delivering his address as a chief guest at the fifteenth annual convocation of Goa University held at the Kala Academy complex on 4 March. (GT)
MAN ROBBED AT GUN-POINT: Four persons held a contractor, Laljee Vishwakarma, at gunpoint at Shram Shakti Bhavan, Patto Plaza, in Panjim on March 4, snatching his cellular phone and some cash. (H)
BRITISH NATIONAL FOUND DEAD: A 25-year-old British national, Emma Gerrard, was found dead at a bar and restaurant in Palolem on March 4 afternoon. Canacona police said the woman was found sleeping outside the bar and the bar owner realized she was dead, when the woman did not move for a long time. (H)
WOMEN WORKING ON NIGHT SHIFTS: Bowing to demands by several women organisations, government (of India) on March 5 decided to lift the ban on women working on night shifts in factories.
TASK OF STERILISING STRAYS: The stray dog population in Margao appears heading for a quantum jump, what with the agencies involved in the dog control programme calling it a day. It's now a little over two months since sterilization of stray dogs came to a halt after NGO Goa Animal Welfare Trust decided to back out from the ambitious programme initiated with Municipal funding, apparently over the quantum of funds required by the NGO go carry out the operations. BHOBE BAGS GOLD MEDAL: Dr Vardhan Subhaschandra Bhobe of Panaji has bagged the Jindal Jubilee gold medal of Goa University for topping at the MS General Surgery examination in April 2002. (GT)
SYNDICATE BANK DIRECTOR: At the extra-ordinary general body meeting of the shareholders of Syndicate Bank, held recently in Manipal, Ranjana Salgaonkar was elected to the board of directors of the bank. Salgaonkar secured the highest number of votes. (GT)
GARBAGE DISPOSAL IN BENAULIM: The coastal Benaulim panchayat and representatives of starred hotels will meet shortly in a bid to find a solution to the acute garbage disposal problem staring at the village. "The meet will primarily deliberate and find ways of solving the garbage menace," informed Benaulim deputy sarpanch, Trevor Pinto. (H)
S GOA BRIDGES: The Goa government will shortly issue a tender for the consultancy report on the proposed construction of three bridges across the Zuari, Galgibag and Talpona rivers along NH 17. The proposed bridge on river Zuari will be parallel to the existing bridge and connect the road, which will pass through Goa Velha. (GT)
PONDA MUNICIPALITY BUDGET: The Ponda municipality has approved an annual budget of Rs.4,51,41,500 for the year 2003-2004, at its meeting held recently. (GT)
CREATING WEALTH OUT OF MINING ORE WASTE (5): "�Mining companies have over the years undertaken extensive afforestation efforts to stabilize the dumps and this has reduced the rate of slope erosion and sedimentation. The Dempo mining company has the record of planting three million trees. Trees do not grow easily on metal rich soils. But once they survive, then their roots hold the dumps. The canopy absorbs the dust and brings down suspended particulate matter. Tree plantations have also given a green look to many dead dumps and after a few decades these dumps would be so unrecognizable that people would mistake these for mini woodlands or bits of forests�" (Nandkumar Kamat in Zest-NT)
25 YRS AS ARCHBISHOP: Today (March 5) Bishop Raul Gonsalves completes 25 years as Archbishop of Goa and Daman. On 30 January, 1978, Pope Paul VI nominated him to this post, with the title of Patriarch of the East Indies. Bishop Gonsalves took canonical possession of the Archdiocese on 5 March, 1978, becoming the 33rd Archbishop of Goa and Daman and the 6th Patriarch of the East Indiesthe first Goan incumbent of that office.
