(If we were >living in another point in history, and South Asia was an emporium of >global wealth as it once was, would our attitude have been the same?) > You got it right Fred. They don't mind identifying with a country that has a history of piracy, looting, rape, plunder and murder just because after doing all that these countries are now richer than the country which they left poorer. But, all that will change ten years from now. Maybe even earlier. Because, India is definitely on the growth path and sooner or later, this poverty phase which is an aberration in India's rich history will wipe out and things will regularise whereby we will soon see a higher per capita income, more purchasing power, more foreign students coming to India to study and more sick people coming to India for medical treatment. In fact, in the post Sep 11 scenario, we may see this even earlier than ten years from now. Nothing new for India as such except for the last 250 years (Goa for 400 plus years) when we were ruled by the crooks of the world. Today, the same crooks are trying to do to the world what they kind of did to parts of it around 250-400 years ago. After all, without that basic looting and plunder and robbery how do they stay afloat ? Sunila I had better return to Goa (india) A.S.A.P. before I miss out on the dramatic improvements. No more water shortages, no more electricity cut offs, excellent medical care at the Goa Medical College. Last but not least polite road users, we don't need crash helmets, excellent roads the Germans autobahns come a distant second.
