Fred,
I agree with some of your views. However, of late Goanet has seen a spate of mails
that promote the 'Sons of the Soil' and Goans v/s Indians theories.
Rather than classify Rajdeep Sardessai as a Goan, to me he is an Indian first. There
are many who don't consider themselves to be Goans at all. He might as well classify
himself as Maharashtrian, as do many other Goans.
Goa being such a nice place, everybody who is remotely associated with Goa, wants
to be classified as a Goan. Wonder how many from Bihar proudly come out and
say that they are Biharis! I know a few from that state and are ashamed to say that
they are indeed Biharis.
On the topic of Konkani, the entire Konkan belt uses Konkani or its variations. Even
the Goans who left Goa in the 15th and 16th centuries during the Portuguese occupation
and settled in Karnataka have maintained their Konkani culture. I think that Goans don't
make any effort to write in Konkani, as much as they make use of English!
Now to the topic of Goa for Goans. There are thousands of Goans who make their
home overseas or work there. How can we keeps Non-Goans out of Goa, when we
go overseas to seek jobs? We do certainly take away jobs from the ethnic population!
Goans going overseas have certainly contributed a lot to the Goan economy. Those
migrating to Goa have also contributed to Goa's economy. When we tolerated the
Europeans for 452 years, why can't we accept and live without any rancour with
the folks who belong ethnically to the same group? Perhaps, we consider ourselves
more white than the Portuguese themselves!
Goans leaving Goa has created a requirement for cheap manpower to be imported
from other states. Then again, how many Goans would be ready to collect garbage
from the streets or mix the cement and take it up five stories on a constructions site!
I think it is a pure case of economics and the sooner we Goans realise it the
better it is, instead of constantly harping on the issue of Goans, Non-Goans and
Indians!

Spot on!
There's one thing I would like to add however. For an emigration-oriented and in-migration prone state, which has been migrating out of its own tiny state for generations, drawing a dividing line between those born in our outside Goa is going to disadvantage maybe one-third to one-half of
Language. Scope for some more emotionalised debate! Just some food for thought (as our school principal used to once say). Or grist for the Goanet mill to spur on some more (hopefully not angry) debate. FN
