(H) BUS FARE HIKE: The government has conceded the demand of the private bus owners and agreed to effect a 30 per cent hike in bus fares from 15 March in view of the recent increase in diesel prices. The bus fare for the first four kilometers will cost a rupee more and passengers will have to shell out Rs.4 per head and for every subsequent kilometer, it would be 35 paise. (GT) SUDHAROP FELLOWSHIP AWARDS: Goa Sudharop Community Development Inc, an NRI group working for the welfare of the Goan community, presented its fellowships for the year 2003 to six recipients at an impressive function held at the Caritas Hall in Panjim on March 6 evening. The recipients were Gurunath Kelekar, Ms Isabel Santa Rita Vaz, Rajendra Kerkar, Subhas Nath Jorge, Afroze Shaikh and Paul Fernandes. Each of the recipients spoke a bit about their respective sphere of activity. In his brief address, the Goa Sudharop initiator, George Pinto, said that at most Goa-based forums he tells overseas Goans that they need to actually visit Goa and witness the development taking place, talk to the various NGOs involved in important community development activities here besides visiting beaches and relatives, and inform their friends and acquaintances about it when they return home, and if possible participate in the sustainable development of Goa in whatever way possible. (GoaNOW) HELMET RULE DILUTED: The government yesterday (March 6) decided to partly implement the use of helmets in the State from today (Mar 7) by allowing the two exemptions to the helmet rule notified in 2001. Transport Minister Pandurang Madkaikar told reporters that the government has decided to grant the two exemptionsexcluding persons driving motorcycles at a speed not exceeding 40 kilometres and persons driving motorcycles in municipal areas from the mandatory use of helmets. He said no traffic police will be authorised to book cases unless the rider was found to be violating the rules by the interceptors.
