VETO POWER.
The five Veto Powers in the Security Council of UN were gifted with the privilege of Veto Power due to their experience in handling and facing the critical issues. All these five Veto Powers were the direct victims of Axis powers in the II World War. These five permanent members namely USA-UK-France-Soviet Russia and China were directly affected and suffered in the II World War and due to this it was then realized that they would use this veto power very wisely for the betterment and protection of world peace and maintain the world order smoothly. During the Cold War crisis Veto power was used as a tug-of war by USA and Soviet Russia to settle their score many times to the chagrin of the weak party. In the last Gulf War if Soviet Russia of Brezhnev era existed I am sure for the sake of humiliating USA Brezhnev would surely use Veto power to prevent USA and allied powers to go to war for the liberation of Kuwait. In this case what would be the fate of Kuwait? Many times Soviet Russia used Veto power brutally and recklessly. Good that Gorbachev was ruling Soviet Russia during the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait. The contribution of Gorbachev would go down in the history of mankind as the greatest for the peaceful co-existence. Gorbachev was the leader with wisdom and foresight. He was the real statesman. He read the writings on the wall and helped dismantling the prostituted communism which was nothing but spread of dictatorships of the ruling parties where suppression of freedom was the priority. The way General Antonio Spinola spearheaded the fall of Salazarist dictatorship in Portugal and its colonies so also Gorbachev spearheaded the downfall of brute communism in Soviet Russia and in East European countries. Gorbachev�s foresight helped smooth passage of the resolution in the UN to move ahead with the liberation war of Kuwait.
The brute way of applying Veto power by Soviet Russia in 1961 helped Bharat to annex Goa even though the question of Goa then could have been solved very amicably and peacefully without even firing a shot in the air by Bharati Army which occupied Goa within 48 hours. That Portuguese had to leave from Goa was a real fact but bringing Bharati Army and occupying Goa in the name of liberation was not correct. Even the great Indian leader Morarjee Desai that time was against this brute decision of Nehru of sending troops to Goa. By such liberation Goa lost its soul and gradually will lose everything it is possessing as a Goa. I am sure the Central leaders of Bharat will turn Goa very shortly into a big brothel if one observes the state of Goa now very minutely. The greatness of Goa that lies in its simplicity is no more in Goa now because Goa is already absorbed by the outside harsh influence which is very foreign to Goa. The Bharati influence on Goa after 1961 has totally destroyed the immaculate image of a Goan as he was known then. In the current situation now nobody can do anything to refer back to pre 1961 and ask for separate identity for Goa. India is too powerful and can easily suppress ruthlessly such a demand. Militant revolts by Khalistan was already crushed with all the powers available at the disposal of New Delhi. Currently, the militancy in Kashmir has not gained victory because of India�s might to face it. Besides, even if there is any genuine demand for separate identity for Goa or autonomy, I am sure major segment of Goans will defeat this demand. The MGP and now BJP elements will use their numerical and other strengths to crush such a demand because they feel they are more Bharati in Goa and others are less. They feel Bharat belongs to them and to their religion. They are communal and they want to convert Goa an authocratic State. If anything was done it could have been during the time of Portuguese rule only but Salazar was a brute and our �Bamonn Bhattkars� were �chamchas� of that brute man and Portugal. During my conversations with some freedom fighters of Goa they told me that they never wanted replacement of Portuguese domination by Bharati domination. They wanted freedom from all powers and keep Goa as independent identity but they too were fooled. The country that came to drive out Portugal from Goa finally became owner of Goa and this ownership will not disappear from Goa unless some supernatural power takes control of the situation. This all happened because of the Veto Power of Soviet Russia. By applying Veto Power Soviet Russia helped India to split Pakistan and now as a revenge Pakistan is teaching a very good lesson to India in Kashmir.
Now, either today or tomorrow or the day after tomorrow but war in the Gulf against Iraq looks certainty. USA has vowed to go for war either with UN sanction or without along with their allies to demolish Saddam�s regime. I have seen the invasion of Kuwait but not seen the deadly war for the liberation of Kuwait. But I know war is war and it can harm anyone. During certain time one has to take very bold steps and going for war is yet another very bold step as it was taken in the last Gulf war for the liberation of Kuwait. If that bold step was not taken then till today Kuwait would have been under the siege of Iraq. During that time Saddam also played the tactics of delaying and evading but finally had to surrender. Now too he is playing the same old tactics. Some nations are opposing war with the excuse that he should be given more time. I am sure Saddam will not surrender his weapons of mass destruction unless he is forced by the war. Saddam does not understand any language other than that of military action. He does not care for political and diplomatic actions, he mocks at such actions. All the Veto Powers are aware of this and yet France, China and Russia want to give more time to Saddam. France and China talk of not supporting war at this stage while Russia is again talking of using Veto power to block American initiative of going to war with the mandate of UN Security Council. I feel USA and other allied powers must try to snatch Russia of the privilege of Veto Power because present Russia does not deserve it. The Veto Power that present Russia enjoys belonged to Soviet Russia and not to current Russia which is minus of so many components of Soviet Russia.
Currently there are moves from different angles to confer Veto power on India with the excuse that due to its geographical size and demographic strength India deserves this right. According to my assessment India is still raw and immature to handle this power. During the invasion of Kuwait India failed in its obligation to be upright in siding with the hurt party. During that time Indian leadership lacked maturity to deal with international issue of that magnitude. VP Singh was o.k. to handle local issues but surely not to tackle international issues. V.P. Singh is not Nehru nor Morarjee Desai nor Indira Gandhi; they are the great leaders having deep knowledge of international affairs inspite of their defects here and there in handling internal matters. India is no more in the process of producing great leaders of great knowledge, great wisdom and great heart. Currently India is producing only regional leaders whose knowledge is nothing beyond the boundaries of their respective states. Current leaders of India are regional, communal and bias in their thoughts and actions and to entrust Veto Power into the hands of India having small minded leaders will be doing disservice to Veto Power. The use of Veto Power should be very appropriate and judicious.
