GOACOM DAILY NEWS CLIPPINGS March 09, 2003 WILLY'S FORMULA: Nationalist Congress Party leader in Goa, Dr Wilfred de Souza, has worked out a simple procedure for delimiting constituencies in Goa by maintaining the equitable distribution of population and geographic continuity. According to Dr de Souza, the whole exercise of delimitation can be achieved by merely making some reallocation of population in Sattari, Bicholim, Pernem, Ponda, Canacona and Quepem, while leaving other constituencies untouched. (WE-GT) DELIMITATION IMPACT: The proposed realignment of the assembly constituencies has become "cause celebre". It is a major development, which will change the political spectrum of Goa. If prior to the statehood of Goa, the demographic composition of the constituencies favoured MGP, the present realignment is advantage BJP. This could result in the Congress Party warming the Opposition benches in future. (H) FRESH WATER AQUIFERS IN DANGER: The freshwater aquifers in coastal areas are in danger of being irreversibly filled with saline water if rainwater is not harvested and allowed to percolate into the ground. This grim warning came from Mr Sekar Raghavan, the Director of the Rain Centre, Chennai, who was speaking at a workshop on "Rainwater Harvesting" at the St Xavier's College, Mapusa, on March 8. OIL SURCHARGE RULED OUT: Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Ram Naik today (March 8) ruled out imposition of surcharge on oil at the moment though war clouds were hovering in the Middle East, but indicated a possible hike in the price of cooking gas. (PTI report in Herald) MERCES FORUM SORE: The Merces Civic and Consumer Forum has decided to call on the Urban Development minister and the Panchayat minister in protest against the government's decision to include some areas of the Merces panchayat into the City of Panaji Corporation Bill. The members expressed their strong resentment over the government's decision to go ahead when the gram sabha passed a resolution strongly opposing the bill. (WE-GT) FOODGRAIN BAGS MISSING: About 406 bags of foodgrains worth Rs.2,89,611 have disappeared from the godown of civil supplies department at Cortalim. A complaint in this regard has been lodged against the godown keeper, Sebasteao Palha, by the Director of Civil Supplies. (NT) HUBBY ATTEMPTS SUICIDE: In a shocking incident a husband attempted to commit suicide at Medical College, while the doctors were conducting a post mortem on his wife (Ranjita), who was found dead only a few hours before. Police sources informed that Ajay Chodankar was in a serious condition after he was found in an unconscious state in a toilet (he had locked himself in) with four cuts on his neck and both his wrists slashed. (H) "CONTRACT WORKER": Goa Pradesh Youth Congress president Girish Chodankar has objected to Goa Government's order No.7/1/85-PER dated 4-2-2003, alleging that the post of Director of Information and Publicity has been given to a contract worker. In a press note, Chodankar said the post of Director of Information and Publicity is a key post in the government, adding that it is a GPSC post. NIGERIAN BOOKED: The Calangute police yesterday registered a case against one Bola Adarsha Solani, a Nigerian national, for overstaying in Go without possessing any travel documents. (WE-GT) THE MAKING OF A TEMPLE: Shri Mahalasa of Verna is one of the most important Devasthanas in Goa. Before the advent of Portuguese, it was the largest, richest, most exquisitely embellished and fortified temple, especially noted for providing shelter to the Hindu widows escaping the dreaded Sati custom, as is recorded by the Portuguese missionaries. In their fanatic zeal to spread Christianity, they destroyed all the temples in Go including this one (1567). The image of Shri Mahalasa was already removed and then transferred to be established at Mardol-Priol in the safe territory outside Portuguese occupation, at that period. KTC Managing Director Arun Dessai said that an order to purchased the new buses has been issued to ACGL. (WE-GT) RETHINK ON HELMET RULE: "Our government, which is very much concerned about the two-wheeler riders, wants to make helmets compulsory in order to reduce fatality rate. I would like the government authorities that in order to understand the problems faced by the two-wheeler riders, they also should ride two-wheelers instead of moving in air-conditioned cars before making the helmet rule compulsory." (AR Pai vaidya in NT) DRUG OVERDOSE: The Canacona police are awaiting response from the British embassy in India to send the body of a British girl who died in Palolem a couple of days ago. The doctors, who had carried out the autopsy have, however, suspected that the death of the girl might have occurred due to overdose of drugs.
