VISIONS OF MOTHER MARY: Weeks after the 'blood-weeping' Sacred Heart of Jesus incident was reported in Camurlim village, droves of faithfuls are making their way to a remote corner of Dona Paula's Aivao hamlet, where a 12-year-old boy, Charles Lopes, had reported to church authorities visions of the Virgin Mary. Scarlet-shaded imprints of crosses, a heart, a 10-beaded rosary and the word 'WAR' appeared and disappeared on the thighs, forearms and chest of the shy and timid lad, lending a degree of credence to the claims. Taleigao's assistant parish priest, Fr Orlando Marques, confirmed having witnessed the imprint of the 10-bead rosary on one of the boy's thighs. (H)

BAIL PAPERS OF DESHPRABHU, KHALAP: An advocate representing Pernem MLA Jitendra Deshprabhu and former MLA Ramakant Khalap yesterday submitted five anticipatory bail applications before the trial court, in Panaji. (GT)

HOUSE PANEL MEMBERS PLAY TRUANT: They traveled all the way from Goa to New Delhi at the cost of the State exchequer to explore the possibilities of reviving the sick Goa Antibiotics unit. But as it turned out, members of the Goa House Committeeexcept its chairman Dr Wilfred de Souzaplayed truant as they failed to turn up at the scheduled meeting before the Drug Controller of India, New Delhi. A disgusted Dr de Souza wondered how the MLAsAlexio Sequeira and Agnelo Fernandes who were seen in New Delhi a day before the meeting, could not make it. (H)

OIL PUMPS TO RUN DRY: All petrol pumps in Goa are likely to run dry as transporters have stopped transportation of petroleum products from the oil companies at Vasco from yesterday (March 13). Petroleum Transport Contractors Association had talks with the oil companies and demanded a release of 30 per cent payment towards transportation charges�(withheld by the companies) and were also told that over 400 tankers would stop supplies if the amount was not paid to them. MILES FOR WANT OF PETROL: Despite the fact that the government earns foreign exchange in crores of rupees from the most active Sinquerim-Baga belt, the tourist who use two-wheelers, stake-holders of tourism industry besides the residents from this belt, have to travel extra miles for petrol. They have to go all the way to Mapusa or may be Anjuna to fill their vehicle tanks. (H)

YOUTH CRUSHED TO DEATH: In a tragic incident, a 21-year-old youth Yogesh Janardhan Bhat was crushed under the wheels of a truck in Ponda. The deceased, who was on his Kinetic Honda bike, was hit by a truck from behind. (GT)

RECOVERY DRIVE BY MAPUSA URBAN: The Mapusa Urban Co-op Bank of Goa Limited has started its recovery drive in a novel way by mobilizing the staff of all the categories to met their large NPA borrowers. A group of 60 to 70 employees went in half-a-dozen vehicles with banners and placards of the bank. They visited about half-a-dozen big borrowers and met the owners of the units/companies, etc, and sought repayment of their dues. (GT)

HELD FOR ASSAULTING PRIEST: The Panaji police on March 13 arrested one Alvito D'Souza, resident of Panaji, for allegedly assaulting the parish priest of Panaji church, Fr Antimo Gomes. (NT)

MUCB RECOVERS RS.4 CRORE: On the second day of its drive to recover pending loan dues from defaulters, the Mapusa Urban Co-operative Bank Limited on March 13 managed to pool in Rs.4 crore from defaulters in Panjim, according to MUCB officials. (H)

HIGHWAY PROJECT TO HIT NUVEM: A cemetery, dozen of bungalows and buildings in Nuvem and Navelim besides 'panchayat ghor' are among the 100-odd structures in Verna facing the threat of demolition, if one goes by the latest circular of the Directorate of Panchayat. The Directorate has informed all the panchayats in the state to leave setback area of 75 metres on either side of the National Highway No.17. (NT)

CONTAINER CARGO: Mormugao Port, one amongst the twelve major ports in India lies between Mumbai port and New Mangalore port on the west coast of India. It ranks fifth among major ports as far as throughput is concerned. At present there are 4 operational berths, berth No.8 (POL berth), Berth No.9 (iron ore berth) and berths 10 and 11 (general cargo berths). In addition, two berths for handling bulk cargo like coal-coke are under construction which is likely to be operational by March 2004. There are no dedicated berths for handling containers and cruise vessels�About 20 to 25 cruise vessels visit Mormugao Port annually carrying about 12,000 to 15,000 tourists. (GT)

JOB-ORIENTED COURSES: In a bid to correct the serious miss-match between education and employment existing in Goa, the government will soon appoint an agency to conduct an extensive market survey to assess the needs of industry and accordingly make the educational courses job-oriented. (GT)

RAMPAGING MONKEY: The rampaging monkey at Malpem village in Pernem taluka may be rabid, says Forest Department after investigating into the aggressive nature of the animal. After attacking the two-member team deployed by Forest Department, the reports from the department indicate that the animal may be suffering from rabies. (H)

STUDY ON MOPA AIRPORT: International Civil Aviation Agency has agreed to commence its techno-economic feasibility on Mopa Airport. The Agency has also shown willingness to complete the task by eight-and-a-half months. The Agency, which is one of the 18 special agencies of the Untied Nations, is acclaimed worldwide for its expertise on civil aviation matters. (GT)

RAPE OF A HILLOCK: Rampant cutting of a hillock at Comunidade of Loutulim was witnessed by the officials of Industries and Mines during an inspection last Tuesday. (GT)

FROM ERROL TO LATE CHRIS PERRY: Errol Perry's Music Workshop, founded in 1992 by Errol Perry under the guidance of his father, late Chris Perry, has become an environment for the best possible experience that breeds only excellence and offers a unique opportunity to find out what one is fully capable of achieving musically. SHIGMO IN TALPONA: The traditional Shigmo festival of the Metri community of Ganebaga-Talpona will begin on Thursday, March 13. The festival will begin by holding the symbol 'Rait de Saunda' of Raja Saundekar and dancing to the tune of cymbals and drums for four days. The banner signifies the fight by ancestors of Raja Saundekar, who fought against the well-equipped forces of Hyder Ali in 1764. (H)

ROSARY NEWSLETTER: The Spiritual Director, at the Patriarchal Seminary of Rachol, released the Rosary College, Navelim, newsletter "Rosary Compass" on the occasion of send-off to TY students recently. (H)

MATHEW PEREIRA TO MALAYSIA: Mathew Pereira, an activist against hazardous waste and research officer with Goa Foundation, left for Malaysia on March 13 at the invitation of the Global Alliance of Incinerator Alternatives, to attend the Global Meeting 2003. The international meet to be held from 17 to 21 March at Copthorne Orchid Hotel in Penang, Malaysia, and hosted by the Consumer Association of Penang and Sahabat Alam Malaysia, will be attended by 122 participants, who will interact and learn about sustainable waste management principles and systems in various parts of the world. Pereira, who is involved in solid waste management and fought against the dumping of Mapusa garbage in Colvale, is also the vice-chairperson for an Urban Nature Park project proposed by John Lally International Foundation for Mapusa town.
