CHALO PANAJI FOR SHIGMO: Beating of drums and a caravan of colourful floats will usher in the four-day Shigmotsav celebrations in the capital city (Panaji) from this evening. The highlight of the celebrations will be felicitation of three artists: Naresh Amonkar of Marcela, Irene Cardozo of Candolim and Nana Shirgaonkar from Tivim, besides other activities such as three-dimensional floats, contests, music and drama. PRIVATE MEDICAL PRACTICE: Commercialisation of the medical profession, mushrooming of private nursing homes and lack of empathy among doctors in treating their patients came under the microscope at a seminar on health yesterday (Mar 18). At a seminar on "Society and Health: Issues and Concerns", organized by the Goa University's Sociology Department, medical practitioners, sociologists and others admitted that the private medical practice needed to be regulated as patients were not being given the best of attention and were often being fleeced. JAPANESE TEAM IN GOA: M Nishikura, general manager, Raw Materials Department of NKK Corporation, accompanied by officials of Marubeni Corporation, Japan, arrived in Goa yesterday (March 18). NKK is one of the largest steel producers in the world and has been importing iron ore from Goa for over five decades. Nishikura will visit various iron ore mines and process plants of Chowgule & Co. DELIMITATION PANEL'S DECISION: The Delimitation Commission on Tuesday has agreed to suggestions to retain the existing Mayem, Priol, Cumbarjua and Madkai Assembly constituencies with some minor variations and has dropped Sanquelim and Se Old Goa from the proposed list of new constituencies. At a meeting held in New Delhi on March 18, the Commission has reportedly decided not to disturb the proposals mooted in the working paper vis-�-vis the four constituencies of Salcete taluka, namely Benaulim, Loutulim, Navelim and Curtorim. EDUCATION LOAN SCHEME: The Goa government's ambitious Higher Education Interest-Free Loan Scheme will be unfolded on 22 March with the disbursement of money to students in the first phase. The government will incur an expenditure of Rs.1.26 crore on the 281 applicants selected for the purpose of loan distribution, of which about Rs.62 lakh will be disbursed on Saturday. (GT)

�UNTIL WORLD CUP: Cricket is still super-hit with the police in rave-hit Anjuna. A mega-sized television set, which was stolen from a foreigner's residence, found a place in the police station, 'at least' until the World Cup. Police claim that the owner has 'agreed' to let the police keep the set, for the World Cup, as a mark of gratitude for having recovered it. (H)

MAN DROPS PANTS IN CLASS: The police are investigating a case in which an unidentified male entered a primary school (in Margao), dropped his pants in full view of the students and committed and indecent act, on 6 March. (GT)

HIGH INCIDENCE OF ALCOHOLISM: Air and sound pollution has undeniably impacted the health of people in mining areas. But also no less significant is alcoholism as a stressor in the lives of those who keep the wheels of the industry moving, according to a study done by Dr Gervasio Mendes, senior lecturer in the department of Economics, Government College, Sanquelim. LABOURER DROWNS IN QUARRY: A 29-year-old labourer, Ramesh Rathod working at a quarry at Sao Jose de Areal, never dreamt that death would take him soon after dipping himself in coloured water on the occasion of Holi celebrations. (H)

HELD FOR DAMAGING PCR VAN: The Colva police has registered an offence against Francis Fernandes of Carmona for allegedly damaging the PCR van and causing obstruction to the police while doing their duty. On Monday night the policemen had reached Francis' residence to oversee the situation after his wife had lodged a complaint against him for creating trouble at home. (NT)

KUWAIT INDIAN EMBASSY'S STEPS FOR SAFETY: The Indian Embassy at Kuwait has initiated a number of steps to ensure the safety of its over three lakh Indian community in view of war clouds hovering over neighbouring Iraq�While Saudi government has expressed willingness to provide transit permit in the event of an evacuation though it may not be necessary, Indian ambassador Swash Pawan Singh informed that the Kuwait airport continued to remain open at present. In the event of an emergency, the Indian Embassy Control Room will operate 24 hours with helplines on Ph 2561276 and 2523276. (H)

BRIDGE NEAR DUDHSAGAR: Face to face with Dudhsagar? A bridge to bring visitors up close to it has been proposed in a project to revive tourist interest in the 'ocean of milk'. The Centre has sanctioned Rs.1.05 crore to the State for the development of tourism-related infrastructure facilities at Dudhsagar and the historic site and temple of Tambdi Surla. (GT)

UCASSAIM PANCHAYAT BUDGET: The Village Panchayat of Ucassaim-Paliem-Punola, in a recent meeting approved its budget of Rs.12,47,800 in which an expenditure of Rs.8 lakh has been earmarked for public works in the village. (NT)

TRADITIONAL SALT INDUSTRY AILING: From a net exporter of salt, Goa today has turned into a net importer as the traditional salt industry is now on the verge of collapse. Salt from Goa was exported to Thailand, Burma and even African countries while in 1855 Goa dominated Asia in salt export. In 1964-65, 200 salt pans were operational in Goa, and by 2002, the number came down to around 16. Salt pans spread in the coastal belt, from Agorwaddo in Morjim to Cavelossim in Salcete, are either non-functional or used for pisciculture promotion. (Bindiya Chari in Herald)

"RIVER PRINCESS": Director General of Coast Guard, Vice Admiral Suresh Mehta, while speaking to reporters claimed that the "River Princess", which has been grounded off Candolim for nearly three years, does not contribute by way of marine pollution as the Coast Guard has taken preventive measures. No oil spill has taken place from the vessel while steps have been taken to make sure that such a marine disaster does not occur, he said. (GT)

SOCORRO SARPANCH VOTED OUT: Socorro Sarpanch Mahanand Asnodkar was voted out of office in a no-confidence motion on Tuesday (March 18). (H)

WARD SURVEYS IN MAPUSA: The Mapusa Active Citizens Union, in association with the media, has formulated a plan to carry out a survey of wards to focus on various problems faced by the citizens, says a press release. The group intends to randomly select wards and look into sanitation, roads, garbage collection efficiency of Mapusa Municipal Council, nuisance of bars in residential areas, illegal business and pollution, lack of play grounds and gardens and preferential development of some wards and total neglect of others due to politics. LORNA TO PERFORM: Goa's nightingale Lorna will perform on Wednesday at the concluding day of "Aprant Maand 2003", organized by the Goa Handicrafts, Rural and Small Scale Industries Development Corporation Ltd and currently underway opposite the swimming pool in Margao. (H)
