IT'S WAR. US ATTACKS IRAQ: US launched an attack on Baghdad this morning with Cruise missiles and F1-117 stealth bombers. The Allied forces have reportedly taken control of the Iraq radio frequency. President George Bush says the attack is aimed only to remove President Saddam Hussein and assures safety of Iraqi people. The attacks seem to be targeted at top military targets. Meanwhile, President Saddam said that Iraq will confront the attack bravely and that the "evil" will lose in the end. (From television reports)

OPERATION EVACUATION: Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Shripad Naik yesterday (Mar 19) stated that Air India and the Indian Airlines will operate special flights to Iraq and Kuwait to evacuate Indians working there, in view of the impending US war against Iraq. He said that the main task of the Union government was to evacuate nearly 3.5 lakh Indians working only in Iraq in case US launches its attack. He said that Indian nationals have been asked to go to the nearest border areas, while special flights would even operate upto Baghdad to airlift its nationals. "We may even cancel the weekly flights to Middle East countries in order to airlift its nationals," the Union minister said. (GT)

A-I ANNOUNCES EVACUATION PLAN: Air India today (March 19) announced that it had drawn up a contingency plan for the evacuation of stranded Indians within 12 hours on receipt of the government's directions. (UNI report in NT)

1 KILLED, 8 HURT IN PORVORIM: One person, Rakesh Sawant (26) of Bicholim, was killed while eight others were seriously injured when the mini-bus in which they were traveling turned turtle, near Sardessai Clinic, Porvorim, on March19 evening. The seriously injured include Ana Menezes of Tivim, Sona Kalangutkar and Nakul Shirodkar from Assonora, Shaikh Majumuddin, Rama Varag and Rupesh Gaonkar from Bicholim, Shekar Naik from Lamgao and Arus Gawas of GRP, Altinho. COPS BEAT UP PICNICKERS: A group of policemen allegedly lathi-charged a group of picnickers at Bambolim beach on Wednesday evening. The picnickers, who hail from St Cruz, claim that 15 policemen assaulted them with lathis, after the picnickers turned down demands from two cops for free beer. (H)

SESSION BUSINESS: The Business Advisory Committee will meet at the Goa Assembly Complex, Porvorim, today evening to finalise the business to be transacted during the month-long Budget session of the Goa Assembly starting from 24 March. (GT)

HASHISH FROM SPANISH COUPLE: In what is considered one of the biggest narcotic hauls in the country in recent times, domestic airlines security personnel nabbed a Spanish couple allegedly trying to smuggle 24 kilos of hashish at the Dabolim International Airport on March 18. The value of the substance seized fro Martin Rosselo Recardo and Maria Delos Reyes, both in their late 20's, is estimated at about Rs.14.4 lakh in the Indian market. (H)

MUMBAI GIRLS SOLD IN BAINA: One Arunendra Pandey in a written complaint to Vasco police alleged that one Azim alias Anwar and another lady, both of Ghatkopar, Mumbai, induced and brought Kalawati Mhatre (16), and Nafisa Siddique (31) from Mumbai, under the pretext of giving them jobs as maid servants in Goa and sold them to one Bhavan Kurli (brothel keeper) from the Baina red light area for Rs.5,000 each. HUSBAND MURDERS WIFE: A woman labourer, identified as Basanti, was allegedly killed by her husband Venkatesh in their rented house at Zuari Nagar on Monday night. (H)

DESHPRABHU, KHALAP BAIL PLEAS: The District and Sessions court at Panjim has disposed off the anticipatory bail applications of Pernem MLA Jitendra Deshprabhu, former minister Ramakant Khalap and three others in connection with the bank mortgage case, and has directed the police to give 48 hours' notice in writing if they need the applicants for custodial interrogation. JOAQUIM AGAINST DISTURBING DRAFT: Cuncolim MLA, Joaquim Alemao, has asked the Delimitation Commission not to disturb the draft working paper as far as the Cuncolim constituency is concerned. Joaquim pointed out that the villages of Sarzora, Paroda, Chinchinim, Dramapur-Sirlim and the Cuncolim Municipal area, which are proposed to be merged in Cuncolim constituency as per the working paper, should be left undisturbed. STAFF SHORTAGE AT MAPUSA BDO: The shortage of staff at the office of the Block Development Officer, Mapusa, is causing great inconvenience to the public of Bardez as also to the few staffers, it is reliably learnt. Sources said that this has resulted in increasing non-compliance and delays by the 33 panchayats of Bardez block as the few BDO staffers are struggling to cope up with follow-up work with the panchayats. GOODS WORTH RS.5 LAKH GUTTED: Good worth about Rs.5 lakh were destroyed in a fire at a factory manufacturing corrugated boxes owned by Ranganath Kuttikar in Kundaim in the wee hours of Wednesday. (H)

ST ESTEVAM FLOAT ABLAZE: The float "Green Island", presented by the residents of St Estevam in the recent Carnival celebrations and which bagged the first prize in traditional category at Panjim, Vasco and Mapusa and second prize at Margao, went up in smoke on March 12, after it was allegedly set ablaze by some miscreants from the village. KONKANI MEET AT MPT: The 16th Akhil Bhartiya Konkani Sahitya Sammelan will be held at the Mormugao Port Institute in Vasco on 10 and 11 May, 2003. The conference creates a fresh sense of solidarity and belonging among Konkani lovers all over India. Noted literateur Gopichand Narang, who is presently the chairman of the All India Sahitya Academy, will inaugurate the Sammelan. (GT)

AORTA FOUNDATION TO PROMOTE ART IN GOA: The creative work of art by Goan as well as foreign artists will be on show at Gallery Gitanjali, Fontainhas-Panjim, on 22 March as a preview to the final phase of Project "Finding Home" to be held in Germany. The Aorta Foundation exhibition in Germany later this year will display the work of Francis D'Souza, Querozito D'Souza, Rajan Fulari, Hanuman Kambli, Apurva Kulkarni, Santosh Morajkar, Chaitali Morajkar, Kirtikumar Prabhu, Rajeshree Thakker from Goa, Manfred Niepal and Herbert Schero from Germany, and Ling Xu from China. Herbert Schero, the initiator of the project "Finding Home" (Helmat Finden) says that the Foundation's decision to establish itself in Goa is meant to further Indo-German cultural relations.
