WAR DENTS THEIR HOPES: The US-Iraq war has put on hold dreams of a group of Goan youth, who were to leave by an Indian Airlines flight today (March 20) to take up jobs in Kuwait. Reliable sources said that around 100 candidates had been selected by a recruiting agency for mostly catering jobs and they were to leave in two batches to Kuwait. Many of the youth were first-timers. Some of them were determined not to lose their jobs and were prepared to risk their lives to travel to the war-zone. (GT)
GOAN EXPATRIATES START RETURNING: After spending several anxious day, Goans today (March 20) heaved a sigh of relief as their kith and kin started arriving from the war-stricken Gulf. Of the 1235 passengers, who arrived in four special Indian Airlines flights operated from Kuwait to Mumbai, about 50 were from Goa. Apart from this, four other Goan families were on board the special flight, which arrived in Delhi from Baghdad. (NT)
CM IN TOUCH WITH CENTRE: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has assured all possible assistance to the Goans working in the Gulf countries in view of the Iraq war that has broken out. Parrikar said he was closely monitoring the situation in the Gulf countries and was in constant touch with the Union government taking up the cause of Gulf Goans in providing assistance to those in need. NCP CALLS FOR GOVT ACTION PLAN: Nationalist Congress Party General Secretary and spokesperson Surendra Furtado has called upon the State government to spell out its plan of action to ensure the safety of Goans employed in the Gulf. Mr Furtado, in a press release, has stated the Union government has still not spelt out its contingency plan vis-�-vis the Gulf Goans, and added that the Union aviation Ministry has compounded the issue by declaring its intentions to suspend flights to Bahrain, Kuwait and other areas in the event of an outbreak of war. MUMBAI CELL TO HELP: A round-the-clock Control Cell manned by senior officials has been set up at Mumbai airport to monitor various activities and help the public vis-�-vis the outbreak of war in Iraq. (GT)

IN MARGAO: The Madgao Shigmotsav Samiti has promised attractive prizes and a variety of entertainment programme on March 21, when the traditional float parade will take to the streets. SCHOOL VACATIONS: According to a DI press release, the first term declared is from June 9 to October 18, 2003 and the second terms from November 10, 2003, to April 24, 2004. The Diwali vacation will be held from October 20 to November 8 while the Christmas one is from December 24, 2003, to January 2, 2004. The summer vacation declared is from April 26 to June 5, 2004. THIRSTY DAY DAYS AHEAD FOR BARDEZ: Bardez taluka is likely to face acute shortage of drinking water this summer even as supply has already been reduced to half of normal. The actual need of water for Bardez taluka has been 65 million litres with five hours of supply daily. However, as of today the department has been supplying just 35 million litres water per day. ELECTRICITY POLE AS MAKE-SHIFT BRIDGE: With authorities ignoring their pleas, residents of Rivona have hit upon a novel make-shift 'bridge' to cross a rivuletan electricity pole. Villagers residing in Madhe ward of Rivona panchayat have a tough time in crossing the rivulet that connects their ward to the neighbouring Kavrem ward. (H)

BREAST CANCER AMONGST YOUNG GOANS: The incidence of breast cancer in Goa is on the rise, and is increasingly affecting the younger age groups. According to Dr Shekhar Salkar, Cancer and Laparoscopic surgeon, until some years ago majority of cases used to be in the age group of 50-plus but now alarmingly 90 per cent of the cases are in the 35-50 age group. INDIAN PORTS ASSCN MEET: The Indian Ports Association, which is the apex association of 12 major ports in India, held its 115th governing body meet in Goa yesterday (March 20). The governing body considered various important issues like land lease policy of major ports and also considered inclusion of the new vendors in the shortlist for manufacture and supply of port equipment and floating crafts. The exhibition will be inaugurated on March 22 at 5.00 pm. The series of paintings in acrylic on canvas will depict the stellar performances by teams and individuals.
