78 GOANS RETURN FROM KUWAIT: In all 78 Goans have arrived here from Kuwait in a regular Kuwait-Goa-Chennai flight of Indian Airlines, which touched down at Dabolim airport at 7.40 a.m., first time after the Iraq war broke out. The anxious relatives and friends, awaiting their arrival outside the airport, heaved a sigh of relief when they saw their dear ones returning safe. The next flight from Kuwait will arrive in Goa on Tuesday. Five Goans, who had migrated to Kuwait for working in construction firms which are located along Kuwait-Iraq border towns, saw their dreams shattered as the Japanese firms, which had hired them on contract basis, abandoned the work due to the war�Ms Jeona of Pilerne said she had planned to return to Goa much before the war broke out. She revealed though there was no fear of war per se but people were gripped by war psyche as one did not know what would happen in coming days�Domnic Dias of Benaulim, said though there was no tension in Kuwait but people feared that the Iraq might use chemical and biological weapons against Kuwait�Cristo Gonsalves of Siridao who arrived in Goa today, said though the firm had not been closed down but abandoned the work in Karaphy, a Kuwait-Iraq border town�Innocence Leitao from Margao who worked in Quahil, informed that many Indians had been laid off as oil refineries had stopped their operations�Ms Christina of Margao, who arrived here with her two married daughters and grand-children, said there was no war fear among Goans in Kuwait. However, she said many shops and other establishments had been closed. (NT)

"KUWAIT IS SAFE": The Indian embassy at Kuwait has reassured the Indian community that despite the tension in the country on account of the war in Iraq, Kuwait continues to be safe and secure for its residents. (H)

"PREPARE PLAN": Ponda Municipal Council former president Irwin Soares has appealed to Union Minister for Civil Aviation Shripad Naik and Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar to prepare a contingency plan to evacuate all Goans in the Gulf. (WE-GT)

GOA BUDGET SESSION: A hectic Budget Session of the Goa Legislative Assembly is all set to commence at 2.30 pm on March 24. The august House has been summoned for a period of 25 days and is scheduled to conclude on April 30. This is the second and the longest session for the year 2003. (H)

"FISH FAMINE": The boat owners have appealed to the government to declare fish-famine and compensate them by waiving off loan installments, saying the fishing season has hit a low this year, threatening their survival and the very existence of the fishing industry. (H)

POMP, GAIETY MARK PANAJI SHIGMOTSAV CELEBRATIONS: The streets of Panaji reverberated to the traditional drum-beats with thousands of people dancing to the tune, along with colourful floats, depicting mythological scenes, effectively projecting the rich Indian culture yesterday evening. The Shigmotsav parade drew a tremendous response from the people from Panaji and surrounding areas. In all 46 groups in three categories participated in the four-hour long parade. Among these 24 were folk dancing groups, ten romtamell and 12 were colourfully designed and mechanically propelled moving floats. The PMC, which associated itself with the Shigmotsav celebrations for the first time, presented a tableau, depicting the Miramar beach and Azad Maidan. (NT)

KRC'S FAST-SPEED TRAIN ONLY AFTER APRIL 15: The commissioning of fast-speed train, between Goa and Mumbai, may be delayed. According to the Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd (KRCL) managing director, Mr B Rajaram, the train would be commissioned possibly after April 15. Mr Rajaram said that the train would take 6 hours to reach Kurla. While, the distance between Pernem to Panvel would be covered in 4 hours, 2 more hours would suffice for the train to reach Kurla on the Central Railway tracks. (NT)

GOAN CUSTOMS OFFICIAL CHARGED: As part of its nationwide drive against corruption, CBI officials have registered a case against a senior Customs official from Goa. The official allegedly purchased a plot in his wife's name at the airport road, Chicalim Circle, for about Rs.8 lakh. He then constructed a posh bungalow, at an estimated cost of about Rs.13 lakh. AUTONOMY PROPOSAL: The Working Committee of Goa Government Employees Association, which met in Panaji recently, discussed the autonomy proposal mooted by KP Kelekar, Principal of Government Polytechnic, Altinho. This has reopened the controversial issue of privatizing the college under the guise of granting autonomy. The issue was foiled by the united resistance by both the teaching as well as the non-teaching staff in the year 1997. (WE-GT)

TILES ROBBED: Some unknown culprits committed the theft of a tiles, cutter worth Rs.12,225 at the newly constructed house of Theresa Lima at Tivim. (WE-GT)

NEW SARPANCHAS FOR KUNDAIM, BORIM: Anita Uday Satarkar was unanimously elected Sarpanch of Kundaim panchayat yesterday, while Supriya Naik got the better of her nearest rival in the battle of the ballots to wrest the sarpancha's seat in Borim. (WE-GT)

CREMATION OPPOSED: Regional bias came to the fore yet again when a non-Goan lady, Laxmi Nana Supermat, died at Marcela in Ponda on Friday (21 Mar). When the body was taken to the Khandola crematorium, villagers gathered there and refused to allow it to be cremated. The police sent the body to GMC, Bambolim. (WE-GT)

GUJ CELEBRATING SILVER JUBILEE: The Goa Union of Journalists is celebrating its silver jubilee this year. On the occasion of the silver jubilee, the executive committee of the union has decided to organise a series of programmes throughout the year. The GUJ has also invited entries for the Lambert Mascarenhas Awards, for excellence in reporting. The last for the entries is April 10. The GUJ has also decided to institute an award for articles written exclusively by sub-editors or deskmen, along with another award for good stories in the field of crime reporting. The entries for the contest should have been published in vernacular/English newspapers, between January 2002 to December 2002. (NT)

MAPUSA SHIGMO PARADE: The Mapusa Shigmotsava Samiti has organized its Chitrarath, Romtamell, folkdance and fancy dress contest today (March 23). "ALLELUIA! PRAISE THE LORD": Dinfa Productions released a new religious album "Alleluia! Praise the Lord" recently. The music for the album is provided by Augustine de Souza with Vivek Antonio, Danielle Rebello, Mathew D'Mello and Marushka D'Souza, Rosy Estrocio and Mikes Dias leading the voices. The hymns are available on audio CD and cassette and consists of vocals and singalong music tracks to enable choirs and others singers to sing n churches or otherwise. (H)

"MY NAME IS ANTHONY GONSALVES": Amidst the serene surroundings of Majorda village, resides one of the greatest musicians Goa has ever produced. Ranging from the veteran music director Anil Biswas to Madan Mohan, Salil Chowdhury, SD Burman and Laxmikant-Pyarelal, Shri Gonsalves has been the Guru of RD Burman and has played for the legendary Mangeshkar sisters. As a tribute to his contribution to Bollywood, the duo of music directors Laxmikant-Pyarelal dedicated a song "May Name is Anthony Gonsalves" in film "Amar, Akbhar, Anthony" immortalized by Amitabh Bachchan to this maestro. LETICIA ELECTED TIVIM SARPANCH: Ms Leticia Fernandes of Auchitvaddo, Tivim, was elected unopposed as the Sarpanch of the Tivim panchayat on Mary 21. After the resignation of Amancia Pereira, the post was lying vacant for the last four months. (H)

ASSAGAO SARPANCH: Victor D'Souza, the enterprising Sarpanch of Assagao village panchayat, who is celebrating his birthday today, appears to have chalked up an effective plan to develop the village by availing of the various Government schemes open to the panchayats. After rebuilding the panchayat ghar and getting its office computerized, as the first major project, on March 21 evening he had the Agriculture Minister and local MLA Dayanand Mandrekar inaugurate the new crematorium constructed by the panchayat. He figures among the few sarpanchas in Goa to voice the serious concern of village wells being tapped illegally for the sale of water for construction work, while the village itself (Assagao) having to depend on water supplied through tankers.
