MHADEI ISSUE: The observation that the contentious Mhadei issue between Goa and Karnataka could be settled through negotiations was made during the "Stakeholders' Workshop" on the Mhadei issue, which was organised by the Department of political science, Goa University, on March 26. The second important point raised during the discussion was the absence of adequate documentation of the Mhadei region whether it is relating to biodiversity or the folk life of the region. Nirmal Kulkarni, in his slide presentation on the endemic/non-endemic ophidian fauna in the Mhadei region, explained why it is important to do documentation of the biodiversity. (H)

SARPANCHAS BEWARE! Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said the government was contemplating necessary amendments in the Goa Panchayati Raj Act to hold the sarpanch responsible for illegal constructions. Replying to the issue raised by MLA Francisco Sardinha pertaining to an illegal construction in Curtorim, Parrikar said an independent authority may be vested with power to hear people's grievances if there is non-action regarding such structures. PANCHAYAT ACT TO BE AMENDED: Minister of Panchayat Manohar Azgaonkar announced that the government would amend the Panchayati Raj Act in the current session of the Goa Legislation Assembly, to remove the several anomalies existing in the Act and also to bring in an element of accountability. The assurance was given to a question tabled by Calangute MLA Agnelo Fernandes, who drew the attention of the House to illegal constructions with 500 metres of the High Tide Line by an American citizen at Candolim. DEATH TRAPS: The Opposition yesterday (March 26) charged the Public Works Department of having become an active abettor of deaths on highways by allowing illegal punctures (side roads). In reply to a question tabled by Pernem MLA Jitendra Deshprabhu, PWD Minister Ramkrishna Dhavlikar stated that in all 156 punctures existed on the National Highway between Patradevi and Panaji, in the ingress and egress for which had not been permitted by the PWD. He also admitted that the punctures did not conform to the highway norms laid down by the Union government. (GT)

SCIENCE STREAM IN ALDONA LIKELY: chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has assured to look into the proposal to start a science stream in the St Thomas Higher Secondary School, Aldona. He gave this assurance while replying to a question by Aldona MLA Dayanand Narvekar, who argued that students from Calvim or Khorjuem, wishful of taking up science for higher education, had to travel all the way to Mapusa. POWER CUT: The Power Minister, Mr Digambar Kamat, assured the House that he would improve the power supply to the villages of Raia, Camurlim and the surrounding areas, at the earliest. He was replying to a question tables by Loutulim MLA, Mr Aleixo Sequeira. (NT)

MISCREANTS BLAST ST ESTEVAM BUNDH: A bundh in St Estevam was damaged after it was blasted by miscreants sometime between Sunday night and Monday morning. Cypriano Rebeiro, chairman of the Tarjem Valoi Tenants Association, stated that miscreants used gelatine to blow up a portion of the bundh. (H)

NEPAL KING, QUEEN ARRIVE: King of Nepal, Gyanendra Bir Bikram Shah Deo, and Queen Komal Rajya Laxmi Devi Shah arrived in Goa yesterday (March 26) on a three-day visit. The King, Queen and their 36-member entourage, arrived from Tirupathi and are staying at Taj Exotica, Benaulim. (GT)

GATEWAYS FOR MARGAO: As part of its beautification drive, the Margao Municipal Council plans to construct gateways at various places within its jurisdiction. All these six gateways will be similar to the arch in the Margao Municipal garden. (NT)

BUS OWNERS REJECT GOVT RATES: The Goa Bus Owners Association has rejected the new fare structure proposed by the government and stood by its demand for Rs.5 for the first four kms and 40 paise for every subsequent km. (GT)

SEX RATIO DECLINE: The logic that prosperity may have brought more tolerance towards the girl child was faulty as the sex ratio in the country has shown a perceptible decline, according to Dr Satish Agnihotri. The sex ratio expert, who has based his findings on the analysis of data on recent studies of National Sample Survey Organisation, said that it does not necessarily mean that more prosperity makes people more forward looking. BIAS TOWARDS GIRL CHILD: The chairperson of Goa State Commission for Women, Dr Pramod Salgaonkar, said that the gender preferences definitely existed in the Goan society, and were even observed amongst educated people. Dr Salgaonkar, who was speaking at a day-long city workshop on "Locating Missing Girls", jointly organised by Bailancho Saad and Centre for Women's Development Studies, Delhi, also said that Goans practice small family patterns and at the same time want to have at least one male child. WOMAN SETS SELF ABLAZE: A 25-year-old married woman, Chand Bi, of Andhra Pradesh, received serious burn injuries when she allegedly set herself ablaze after dousing kerosene on her at the rented room at Agonda on Monday, following an altercation with her husband over his getting married to another woman in Andhra Pradesh. Her husband, Mastan Shaikh, who rushed to her rescue, also sustained minor burn injuries. (GT)

2-YEAR-OLD GIRL DROWNS: In the third case of an accidental child death in and around port-town Vasco, a two-year-old girl, Pratiksha Krishanand Upadhayi, drowned on Wednesday (March 26) afternoon when she fell into a small private pond at her residence in Chicalim. She was playing in the lawn while her mother was nearby. (H)

CHILD MISSING: Abdul Razak, a two-and-a-half-year-old child, has been missing from his house at Baina-Vasco since 3 March, according to the child's mother Noor Mohammed Shaikh. (GT)

WATER SHORTAGE IN PERNEM: The residents in Pernem have demanded that a permanent solution to the problem of water shortage be found to end sufferings of both human beings and cattle in the summer months. The sweltering heat in the months of March, April and May is likely to lead to the depletion of water in wells, streams and lakes, and subsequent water shortage will create problems to the rural folk, who, besides their domestic need, require water for their farms, fields and cattle. SHIGMO AT CHAURI: The Canacona Shigmotsav Samiti in association with the Tourism department will organise the shigmotsav float parade on March 29 at the government mini complex at Chauri, with romtamel, and folk dances. (H)

NEW COMPANIES: The Panaji-based office of the Registrar of Companies for Goa, Daman and Diu, has registered nine new companies in Goa, during the month of January 2203. The total authorized share capital of the new companies registered is to the tune of Rs.95 lakh. (GT)

FRIDAY BALCAO, the fortnightly discussion event on March 28 will feature the situation of child domestic workers in Goa presented by Fr Desmond de Souza, who has been involved in social issues in Goa and internationally for the last 30 years.
