BUSES TO GO OFF ROADS: Least bothered about the plight of students appearing at the HSSC board and final school examinations, the private bus operators have resolved to go on a flash strike today (March 28) by keeping away their 2000 odd buses off the roads protesting against the proposal of passengers' tariff of the State government. The state-owned Kadamba Transport Corporation has geared up to deal with the situation and has decided to ply its full fleet of 310 buses. The Transport Minister, Mr Pandurang Madkaikar, told reporters that the government will take all necessary measures to avoid any inconvenience to the passengers. (NT)

"GOOD JOB": Expressing his disgust in the course of discussions during the question hour yesterday (March 27) Leader of the Opposition Pratapsing Rane said, "On two occasions I requested you (PWD Minister Ramkrishna Dhavlikar) to visit sites in my constituency (Poriem). But you prefer to sit at home. You also keep your phone off the hook. All of you sit throwing up your hands. But the chief minister is doing a good job, so I am not interested in topping the government." (GT)

ABOUT WATER SHORTAGE AT GMC: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said he would look into the charge made by Leader of Opposition Pratapsingh Rane that surgeries at the Goa Medical College had to be cancelled at the last minute for want of water supply. (GT)

DIRECT PIPELINE TO GMC: The Minister for Public Works Department, Mr Ramkrishna Dhavlikar, announced that a direct water connection line would be provided to the Goa Medical College via Agassaim, next week. (NT)

APPROPRIATION BILL PASSED: The State legislative assembly today (March 27) passed the Goa Appropriation (Vote on Account) Bill authorizing the government to withdraw an amount of Rs.525 crore from the consolidated fund of the state to meet the State's expenditure for the first two months, April and May, in the new financial year 2003-04. PROBE INTO KTC MINI-BUSES PURCHASE: The government has taken a decision of directing the CID Crime Branch here to institute and inquiry into the illegalities pertaining to purchase of sub-standard mini-buses by Kadamba Transport Corporation between October 2000 till date. CM Manohar Parrikar yesterday admitted that the Corporation was systematically ruined by its officials, who he charged were politicized. (GT)

ONE CRUSHED UNDER TRUCK: One person was killed while another was injured when a truck ran over them while they were sleeping near Shruti Rolling Mills, IDC, Bicholim, on Wednesday night. (GT)

KILLED IN MISHAP: Santan Fernandes, a 38-year-old man from Bogda Vasco, died when he lost control of the scooter he was riding and rammed into an electricity pole. He sustained head injuries. (H) No mention whether he was wearing a helmet.

BODY FOUND: A male body was found in a boat house at the Baga beach on Thursday morning. The deceased is estimated to be about 65 years and his death was caused due to natural factors according to the autopsy report. (H)

MISSING WOMAN FOUND DEAD: Kavita Krishna Pednekar, a 26-year-old woman from Pirna, who was reportedly missing since the last three days, was found dead in a well near her residence. Kavita, married about one year ago, is suspected to have committed suicide. (H)

GOANS SAFE IN KUWAIT: Though the US-Iraq war is in full swing, the situation in Kuwait is calm and Goans in the region and adjoining areas are safe. According to a message received from president of Goans Welfare Society in Kuwait, Alex Wilson Coelho, by NRI Goa Facilitation Centre in Panaji, there was no immediate danger to the community at large. NRI GOA CELL SEEKS�: The NRI Goa Facilitation Cell, Panjim, has asked the chief Minister, Manohar Parrikar, to make provisions for additional admissions to schools in the coming academic year, should need arise, as a special case for the children of families returning from the Gulf. (H)

DELIMITATION: NO MAJOR CHANGES: The latest draft proposal of assembly constituencies of Goa finalised by the Delimitation Commission has not effected major changes to the draft working paper except in few assembly segments of Bardez and Salcete talukas. More than 12 constituencies have undergone only minor changes. Vaddem has been retained as the proposed new constituency, Poinguinim removed from the list, Penha-da-Franca retained but name changed to Porvorim, Dhargalim spreads over Bardez, Bicholim and Pernem talukas, Sanquelim missing, Madkaim and Priol are two separate constituencies. GERMAN HELD: A 52-year-old German national, Peter Cirksena, was arrested by the Calangute Police on Thursday (March 27), on charges of encashing a fake 500 US dollar note at a money exchange centre, owned by Xavier Rodrigues, at Calangute. (H)

MARGAO KTC DEPOT IN BAD SHAPE: The entire sanitation system at the biggest depot of the Kadamba Transport Corporation at Margao is in a precarious condition and if remedial steps are not taken immediately, it may prove to be disastrous to the 600 employees, who are working at this depot. NEPAL QUEEN SHOPS IN MARGAO: The Queen of Nepal, Komal Rajya Laxmi Devi Shah, yesterday (March 27) visited Caro Corner and Caro Center in Margao along with two other family members and made purchases worth Rs.60,000. The Queen spent over an hour choosing saris, kurtas, bay suits and dress material. The royal guests were said to be insisting on saris without borders. (GT)

ELOPED UP COUPLE HELD: Colva police yesterday placed a young couple under arrest for having eloped form Uttar Pradesh. The police had received a complaint from their UP counterparts against one Raju Sharma (30) for having kidnapped a 17-year-old girl. (GT)

SEMINAR ON TRANSLATION: A seminar on "Crossing the Borders through Translation" will be organised by the Kala Academy at the Black Box at 10.30 am today, in collaboration with the Goa Konkani Akademi.

"GULAB" AWARDS:" Dr Nandakumar Kamat has been unanimously declared "Goan of the Year" for 2002 by Konkani monthly magazine "Gulab", for his path breaking work in scientific and environmental issues. The other awards go to Mathew Araujo (best actor in khelltiatr "Bovall"); Rosy Alvares (best actress in "Mhoji Maim Mhoji Dusman", Roseferns (best script writer for "Mitt"), Prince Jacob (best director in "Rontto"), Anthony Xavier Brinjel (best upcoming artiste), Climax Lawrence of Salgaocar Sports Club (best sportsman) and Fr Jose Dias (best writer in Roman Konkani). WORKING FOR KONKANI CAUSE: One among those dedicated and devoted to the cause of Konkani language is Daniel de Souza, who hails from Saligao but presently residing in Vasco. His first Konkani story "Sarah" figured on the Konkani monthly magazine "Gulab" and that motivated him to pursue writing in Konkani. He is a well-known drama critic, one of the few Goan journalists who write simultaneously for the English and Konkani media publications. "The Goan Review", a bi-monthly magazine, published from Mumbai in English and Konkani, recently declared Daniel as the "Goan Review Man of the Year 2002" for his contribution towards Konkani literature, art and culture.
