BUS STRIKE PEACEFUL: A day-long strike by the private bus operators to demand revision in bus fares hike passed off peacefully even as commuters and specially students answering their Goa Board examinations were partially affected by it. The Goa Bus Owners Association had given the call in protest against the fare structure proposed by the government. However, the strike seemed to have little effect in some areas as commuters managed to reach their offices and the students their examination halls on time. The KTC made arrangements by rescheduling the bus timings so that the traveling people were not put to inconvenience. (GT)
GOA-HYDERABAD GAS PIPELINE: The Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India, has accorded its environmental clearance for laying of the Goa-Hyderabad gas/hydrocarbon pipeline. The cross-country pipeline to be laid by M/s Gas Transportation and Infrastructure Company Ltd, Delhi, is to traverse through the states of Goa, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh and will carry gas/hydrocarbons being explored in the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal. The 684 km long pipeline has been divided into three stretches, viz Goa to Kolhapur 183 kms, Kolhapur to Dulkhed 184 kms and Dulkhed to Dundgal 287 kms. (H)
AFTER GARBAGE, IT IS MEDICAL WASTE: Even as Goa grapples with the garbage problem, the burning of medical waste by primary health centres in villages may soon be the next public-interest issue. In a somewhat unprecedented move, a group of residents from Olaulim-Pomburpa have filed a police complaint against the nearby government Primary Health Centre, Aldona, accusing it of creating public nuisance and environmental hazards by burning its medical waste in a bin behind the centre. PEACE MARCH BY SFX HIGH SCHOOL IN SIOLIM: Over 700 students along with 80 plus teachers of St Francis Xavier High/Higher Secondary School in Siolim, took out a 5-km peace march this morning (March 29) in the village. The placard-carrying students walked from their school to the Siolim bazaar and then crossed the Chapora bridge via the Tar. "We want people to be aware that the world needs peace and that war is not a solution but something that can only cause more problems," said Fr Paul, principal of the school. "We pray that the war between America and Iraq ends and peace prevails once again," said Fr Thomas Yeole. "Peace is the most important thing of the hour today because the whole world is suffering because of the trouble taking place in Iraq. It is the moral responsibility of all educated citizens to pass on the message of peace to everyone," said PT teacher Devendra Prabhudessai. (GoaNOW)
HASHISH SIZED AT AIRPORT: In yet another drugs haul at the Dabolim airport, the Customs officials arrested three British nationals and seized 15.8 kg of Hashish in two separate cases yesterday (March 28). The Customs officials arrested Norton Christopher Leigh and Lomas Lodine and recovered hashish weighing 7.4 kg. Again in another catch, the Customs arrested Brjan John Charles Henry (58) who was traveling by Monarch flight and recovered narcotics weighing 8.4 kg. (GT)
SHALINI MURDER CASE CLOSED: The high-profile Shalini Asnodkar murder case has been closed by the Crime Branch due to lack of evidence. Shalini Asnodkar, a fruit/vegetable vendor and sister-in-law of former deputy speaker Ulhas Asnodkar, was waylaid, robbed and murdered at Sangolda, by unknown persons in October 2001. (H)
DELIMITATION: DISSENTING PROPOSALS: Taken aback by the draft Delimitation proposals, turning down its suggestions for minor variations in some constituencies of Salcete taluka, the Congress Party has prepared dissenting proposals which will be submitted to the Delimitation Commission by March 31. 'NO' TO DECLARE AGUADA PLATEAU ECO-SENSITIVE: A private member's move in the Goa Assembly to urge the government to declare Aguada plateau as an environmentally sensitive area and to constitute a plan for establishing botanical garden was rejected by the House. The resolution had been tabled by Congress MLA Agnelo Fernandes. Town and Country Planning Minister Atanasio Monserrate said that the amusement park had been cleared only by Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority while Archaeological Survey of India, Town and Country Planning Department and Village Panchayat was yet to okay it. A few Congress MLAs demanded that the project be scrapped as Indian Resorts Limited, to whom 3 lakh sq m had been leased in 1997, was known not to have made any payment. (GT)
BODY RECOVERED: The body of Madhu Naik (50) of Pishi Dongri, Vasco, was found floating in the Kushawati river at Zambaulim on March 28. Naik was reportedly drunk when he and his colleague went swimming in the river on Thursday. (GT)
REMANDED FOR BANK DUPING: The JMFC, Panaji, has remanded Jonas Fernandes of Porvorim, one of the accused, of the husband and wife team, who allegedly tried to dupe two local banks to benefit themselves to the tune of (Rs)7,50,000 to judicial custody till April 1, 2003. (H)
ODXEL RESIDENT'S SUICIDE: Ms Vishranti Gaude alias Sarita, of Odxel, Dona Paula, committed suicide by hanging to a ceiling fan at her residence on March 28. The deceased was mentally unsound and under doctor's supervision. (NT)
GIRL RESCUED: A minor girl was rescued by the Vasco police from the red light area at Baina. The victim was identified as Yamnavva Harijan from Bijapur. Police said that the girl was married at her native place and had come to Baina on her own. (GT)
BSNL'S "PHONE PLUS" FACILITIES: The BSNL has launched a number of "Phone Plus" facilities, which offer a host of phone services, converting the old basic telephones into a sophisticated tool. Though all the "facilities" are available free of cost, one will have to pay for the instrument that enhances the applications of the basic phone. "Plus" facilities: Calling Line Identification, Call waiting, Abbreviated Dialing, Hot Line, Call Transfer, Automatic Wake-up/Reminder Call service, Number/Call Hunting Service, etc. (H)
SUBSIDY TO FARMERS: The Minister for Agriculture, Mr Dayanand Mandrekar, assured the House that he would "sympathetically review" the issue of subsidy required by the farmers growing areca-nut, oil palm and coconut, for pesticides and weedicides. Presently, there is a provision of such subsidy only for the sugarcane growers. Mayem MLA, Mr Harish Zantye, had tabled a question inquiring about the support price for agricultural/horticultural products. (NT)
RAZING OF "HERITAGE" BUILDING: The government's failure in notifying heritage buildings and sites has raised fears among conservationists that all such properties of old vintage may disappear in due course of time. One such building on the western block of the municipal garden, which was included in the draft list, is being razed to pave way for another high rise. The building on Cunha Rivara road was included in a draft list of 465 heritage properties, sites and artifacts compiled at the government's behest by architect Poonam Verma in 2000 in association with Goa Heritage Action Group. Says Heta Pandit of GHAG, "Why is the government reluctant to frame regulations to protect its own heritage?" (GT)

GOA-DELHI DIRECT FLIGHT: The Goa-Delhi Indian Airlines direct flight, which was suspended nine months ago, will be resumed from May and it will be operated thrice a week. The Minister of State for Civil aviation, Mr Shripad Naik, said that the decision to resume the flight was taken recently. The flight will leave for Delhi from Dabolim airport at 1.50 pm and will arrive in Goa at 12.50 pm. (NT)
