Canadians Demonstrate in Favor of U.S.-Led War
Sat Mar 29, 2:54 PM ET

TORONTO (Reuters) - Canadians, shrugging off opinion polls that give majority support for the government's anti-war stance, marched to show solidarity with the United States on Saturday in protests designed to counter anti-war rallies of recent weeks.

The biggest demonstration took place in the capital Ottawa, where some 5,000 people braved rainstorms to gather on Parliament Hill, waving American flags and carrying banners backing the U.S. position.

"This is not a pro-war rally, this is a pro-freedom rally, to support our allies," Peter Goldring, a member of parliament for the opposition Canadian Alliance, told CBC Newsworld.

Other rallies were planned for the oil-rich province of Alberta, where pro-American sentiment is strongest and for other centers in central and western Canada.

Canada's Liberal government has declined to participate in the U.S. led war against Iraq (news - web sites) and opinion polls show that up to 70 percent of Canadians back that position, despite concern that it is escalating tensions with the United States, which is Canada's largest trading partner by far.

There have been regular anti-war rallies across Canada, the largest of them in French-speaking Montreal.

But Goldring said the fact that people were marching in favor of the United States on Saturday showed that a "silent majority" actually supported the war.

"We do have a new world reality following Sept. 11, and the new world reality says that we must go to root out terrorism," he said.
