Christians developing minority complex

NEW DELHI, MARCH 25. Christians in the Capital who
until three years ago never thought of themselves as a
minority but considered themselves as an integral part of
society have of late shown a tendency to harbour a
"minority complex". Describing it as a very serious and
unfortunate development for society as well as the
community, the Delhi Minorities Commission has called
for immediate steps to boost the morale of the Christians
and to discourage the forces of disruption. Christians
constitute one per cent of Delhi's population. In its annual
report for the year 2001-2002, the Commission regretted
that the community that has lived in peace and served
society selflessly has come under a sustained
misinformation and intimidation campaign in the recent
past. The report was tabled in the Delhi Assembly last
week. The Commission, which was constituted by the
Delhi Government in May 2000, says in its report that the
Christian community has been facing acute problems in
respect of space both for worship and for burial of the
dead. (Hindu 26.3.03)
