The nation wide 'Jal Yatra' (Water March) led by renowned water conservationist and winner of Magsaysay Award , Dr. Rajendra Singh is arriving in Goa on 11th April 2003.
The Yatra was started from Mahatma Gandhi's ashram at Sabarmati, Gujarat on January 30th, 02 and has covered the states of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Orissa, Bengal and at presently is in Maharashtra.
One of the main objectives of the Yatra is to create awareness about the fast depleting water resources and growing commercialisation of it. The yatra in Goa is being coordinated by Peaceful Society and Goa Desc Resource Centre,.
In Goa the following programme has been tentatively chalked out:
Friday, 11th April 2003: 9.30 a.m. to 1.30 p.m. visit to some sites where level of destruction of water bodies is grave. 2.30 to 4.00 p.m.- Visit to coastal areas 4.00 p.m.to 6.00 p.m. Friday Balcao at Mapusa
Saturday, 12th April 2003 : 9.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. Meeting with representatives of local bodies. 3.00 p.m. to 5.00 p.m. consultation meeting on water crisis and conservation in Goa with various organisations. 5.00 to 6.00 p.m. meeting with Goa press persons.
The organisers are planning to have one or two interactions with the local government agencies and have requested the Honourable Chief Minister of Goa to use the presence of Dr. Rajendra Singh in discussing various ways and means of water conservation.
The organisers appeal to the public and all those who are facing hardships due to water shortage to cooperate generously in this programme.
