'SARS' ALERT: Health officials in Goa were working on a plan on Wednesday to tackle any exigencies in case persons infected with the deadly pneumonia virus, which is spreading public health concerns across the globe, enters the State. (H)
TALEIGAO POLLS WITHIN 6 MONTHS: Taleigao, which has been reverted to the status of village panchayat with effect from April 1, will have a five-member panchayat body, elections for which will be held within six months. (H)
RS.15 LAKH FOR MARATHI BHAVAN: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar handed over a cheque of Rs.15 lakh to Shashikala Kakodkar, project manager for the Marathi Bhavan, at a get-together held at the Bhavan premises at Porvorim yesterday. With the handing over of the balance amount, the State government has fulfilled its commitment of donating Rs.25 lakh towards construction of the premises. (GT)

"CARAVELA" STAFFER DIES: Ravindra Khati, 47, captain of casino "Caravela" died in a car crash on the Dona Paula-Miramar bypass highway at 1.45 am yesterday after his grey coloured Indica went out of control. Khati sustained fatal head injuries. (GT)
BODY FOUND: The dead body of Pedro Salvador Carvalho of Ambaulim-Quepem as found floating in the Khushavati river at Cusmane-Quepem. This is the second incident of drowning in the river within a gap of few days. (H)
ONE ASSAULTED: Enraged over discontinuation of service of his younger brother, 27-year-old Vishant Vikas Askaonkar from Ambedkar Nagar, Assagao, severely assaulted his brother's employer, Mr Stanley Braganza (29) from Mapusa. (NT)
THEFT OF IVORY IMAGES: The Margao police have failed to achieve a breakthrough in the theft of five ivory images reported stolen from a chapel at Colmored, Navelim. (NT)
NOC HOLDERS IN QUANDARY: While the government is completing the ground work for the proposed Rs.600 crore project of widening the existing Highway from Pernem to Canacona (NH 17) to four-lane, the government's recent decision to freeze all construction activities 65 metres on either side from the centre of national highway seems to have opened a Pandora's box. MUSHCAVEREM IN WATER CRISES: Mushcaverem is caught in the ice-like grip of mining. Battling the dust and the grind of the activity sapped the villagers energy. Now they have another problemwater shortage. Indiscriminate pumping of water round-the-clock form a huge mining pit has pushed the water table perilously low in the area. (GT)
SANGUEM PHC IN DIRE STRAITS: The pathetic condition of the Primary Health Centre in Sanguem, which has 13 sub-health centres and two rural medical centres under its jurisdiction, has no facilities and is only equipped to provide first aid. Patients with serious complications are referred to Hospicio Hospital, Margao. To add to the problems, the HC is understaffed. (GT)
NON-USAGE OF HELMETS: Thirty two-wheeler riders were killed on Goan roads due to non-usage of helmets, claims a press note issued by the Traffic Department. The note also claims that such deaths account for more than 59 per cent of motor vehicular accidental death. (H)
PARSEKAR'S PLANS FOR MANDREM: A new water supply pipe line parallel to the existing one, widening of mid-district road in the constituency and uninterrupted power supply through commissioning of 60 transformers in the constituency, will change the face of the Mandrem constituency, MLA Laxmikant Parsekar told reporters at his office at Mandrem on Gudi Padva Day. GOVT TO BUY BOAT-HOUSES: As a first step towards exploiting the potential of scenic waterways in the State, the Tourism department has plans to purchase boat-houses for tourists visiting the State. The boat-houses will have cabin accommodation, dining and living space, besides indoor recreational facilities for tourists. Each boat will cost Rs.4 lakh to Rs.6 lakh. (GT)
TIVIM CONSUMERS' NETWORK: The Tivim Civic and Consumer Forum has resolved to strengthen the consumer movement at the village level and network with other consumer forums in the State, according to Dominic D'Souza, president of the TCCF, who was speaking at an awareness programmes at Livramento Hall on Saturday. MAINTENANCE OF LAKES: The South Goa ZP members in the monthly meeting resolved to give top priority to the maintenance of various lakes in South Goa to check the decreasing water level. Fearing water scarcity, the Curtorim ZP member, Mr Alex Lawrence, suggested that the lakes in South Goa need urgent desiltation. (NT)
BUDGET FOR CALANGUTE: The Calangute panchayat passed the annual budget of Rs.1.35 crore at a recently held meeting. (GT)
TIATROTSAV AT SANVORDEM: Shenoi Goembab Seva Kendra, Sanvordem-Curchorem, will organise an All Goa Tiatro Festival at the government primary schools complex, Sanvordem, on the occasion of Asmitai Varsha from 30 April to 4 May. (GT)
TURTLE "MELA": The Centre for Environment education recently organised a one-day "turtle mela" at St Anthony's High School, Galgibaga, as part of the turtle conservation education programme in schools. (H)
SAINTS PROCESSION AT GOA VELHA: The St Andrew's Parish, Goa Velha, will hold its annual Procession of Saints (Santanchem Pursanv) on April 7. The procession is held on the fifth Monday of the Lenten season. The 30 life-size images of the saints, which will be carried out devotionally in the procession, will be kept in the Church till April 9. The procession will be preceded by the Holy Eucharist at 4.30 pm. (H)
PENITENTIAL SERVICE: The Penitential Service at the Khorlim Cross, popularly known as Dongravelo Khuris, will take place on April 4. The procession will leave St Jerome's Church at 4 pm and the service will begin with Stations of the Cross followed by Mass. (NT)
"LOTLEKARS IN MOOD": The exhibition of "Lotlekars in Mood", displaying caricatures of noted personalities in Loutulim village, was inaugurated by Sushant Cuncolienkar, Margao in-charge of daily "Tarun Bharat", at the Big Foot art gallery on April 2. The exhibition has on display around 56 caricatures drawn by Mr Ignatius Mascarenhas, who is a Limca Book record holder for his capability to memorise the images and draw them at leisure. (NT)
MELISSA TOPS: Melissa Rodrigues of Santana village, Ilhas, who represented the National Cadet Corp of Karnataka and Goa Directorate at the Republic day Parade in New Delhi, received the "Best Senior Wing Contingent" NCC trophy at the hands of the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee. Ms Rodrigues along with Verna Honnavar were the two Goan girls to represent Goa State. (H)
