HALT COAL OPERATIONS, CM TO MPT: The State government has directed Mormugao Port Trust to halt all unloading and loading operations of coal from 6 am on Saturday and will appoint a committee to study the dust pollution in Vasco. Announcing this, Chief Minister, Manohar Parrikar, who had a meeting with the MPT officials earlier yesterday, said that a committee will be constituted shortly to suggest short and long-term measures to check the pollution menace at the port. MPT handles around 2.5 million tonnes of coal annually, mostly imported from China and Australia, for onward transport to Karnataka-based industries. (H)

61.99% PASS SSC EXAM: A total of 10,257 candidates have successfully cleared the SSC examinations conducted by the Goa Board for March\April 2003, registering a pass percentage of 61.99 per cent. As usual, girls outbeat the boys with a pass percentage of 59.35 per cent while the boys followed closely with 54.87 per cent. Releasing the results at a press conference held on Friday evening, Chairman of the Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education, P R Nadkarni disclosed that a total of 16,546 candidates appeared for the examination, in the whole category through 22 centres. PANEL TO DECIDE: The fate of the 30 students involved in the Secondary School certificate exam paper leak case will depend on the decision of a committee appointed to look into the matter. (GT)

1 DEAD, 12 HURT AT DHARGAL: One person died while 12 others were injured, when three vehicles collided with each other on the National Highway at Mahakhajan in Dhargal on Friday afternoon. Pernem police said the mishap took place at the site where hotmixing work was in progress, which had prompted the closure of one side of the road to traffic. A passenger minibus , which was proceeding from Pernem to Mapusa, first collided with a Maruti car and then rammed into a luxury bus, which was proceeding from Panjim towards Kolhapur. (H)

GOVERNOR LAUDS KONKANI WRITERS' CONTRIBUTION: The Governor Kidar Nath Sahani lauded the contribution of Konkani writers for rejuvenating the regional language and inspiring the people to develop the language. He was speaking after felicitating seven stalwarts of Konkani renaissance Fr Moreno de Souza, Purshottam Mallya, Manoharrai Sardesai, Fr Antonio Pereira, Ravindra Kelekar, Monsg Alexander D'Souza and Pandurang Bhangui at a function organised by the Shennoi Goembab 125th anniversary Mahatsov Samiti, at Kala Academy's Black Box on Friday. The governor described Shennoi Goembab as a national hero and said that other Konkani writers need to be commended for their literary works as they too through their writings have helped to take the nation ahead�Editor of Gulab, Fr Freddy J D'Costa, also spoke on the occasion. ARRESTED FOR CAUSING DAMAGE TO EDUARDO'S PROPERTY: Two persons reported to be labourers were arrested by Maina-Curtorim police, on the allegations that they negligently set fire into the drainage which spread into the property belonging to Congress Rajya Sabha member Eduardo Faleiro, destroying flowers and other plants. The loss caused as a result of the fire was put at around Rs 20,000. (H)

SANDALWOOD SEIZED: The Panjim mobile squad of the Forest Department on Thursday raided two sandalwood oil extracting factories in Canacona and seized about 170 kgs of sandalwood worth about Rs 1.53 lakh, that was alleged to have been stocked without valid permits. About 130 kgs of sandalwood pieces were seized from the factory located at Mokhard, while 40 kgs was seized from the Dumanem plant. When contacted, Deputy Conservator of Forest V T Thomas confirmed the seizure, but could not give further details into the case. Not a single sandalwood tree is grown in Goa, but there exist four sandalwood extracting factories in the State. (H)

EXTEND SUMMER VACATION OF SCHOOLS: UGDP: The United Goans Democratic Party general secretary Prashant Naik has requested Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar to extend the summer vacation of the schools by one week, that is, till June 15. Citing reasons for the request of the summer vacation in a letter written to the Chief Minister, Naik said that since the monsoons has not yet started, several villages in Goa are facing acute water shortage. "Even places which were never affected by water shortage are facing severe problems as most of the wells in the villages have gone dry," he said. He also said that most schools in the villages in Goa are covered by asbestos sheets and without fans. "Due to increase in temperature, it will be difficult for students to sit in the classes in such conditions", stated Naik. (H)

PG JOURNALISM COURSE: Is journalism the latest "in thing" in Goa? Beginning this academic year, two institutions intend to start a one year post graduate diploma course in Journalism and Mass Communication. Two Panjim-based institutions Dhempe College of Arts and Science and Mustifund are virtually set to start the course. However, for Dhempe College, governmental approval is awaited while Mustifund is going ahead with the course - with or without the government approval. (H)

RAPE ACCUSED REMANDED: The Judicial Magistrate First Class of Panaji on Friday remanded five accused to seven days of judicial custody in connection with the alleged rape of a girl student at the Goa College of Art here (Panaji) .The police had produced students of the college Vishal Dhuri, Roy Fernandes, Norman Fernandes, Vishal Mehta and canteen contractor, Audumber Dabholkar before the court. US LEGISLATORS TO VISIT GOA Seven legislators from the United States, including Republicans as well as Democrats, would be visiting Goa from June 8 to 11, to study the political system prevalent in the state. Ms Pamela Gonzalez, Ms Jacqueline Jackson, Mr Walter Burnett Jr, Ms Lynette Boggs McDonald, Mr Dan Roach, Mr Alex Mooney and Mr Brett Franklin will be visiting Goa, besides New Delhi and Andhra Pradesh. The members of the delegation are in the age group of 25 to 40 years and are visiting India under the auspices of American Council of Young Political Leaders (ACYPL)�the young American Democrats and Republicans would be discussing cultural and social activities, and housing policy, besides political and community issues. "They will also donate educational books worth $ 20,000 to the the Goa University," he briefed. (NT)

ASSAULT ACCUSED RELEASED ON BAIL: Rosit Rebello and Agnelo Carvalho of Ambaulim village, who were arrested by the Quepem police for assaulting and threatening Mr Suresh Naik, police havaldar attached to the Quepem police station while discharging his duty, were released on bail. The duo were released on bail bond of Rs 4,000 each with one surety in like amount. The police had registered an offence under Sections 353, 333, 504 and 506 (II) of the IPC against them. The accused were also sent for medical examination as they were found under the influence of alcohol. (NT)

'FLORAE KINGDOM CAN BENEFIT MANKIND": A lecture on 'Plant, Economy and Environment' organised at the Goa Science Centre (GSC), on the occasion of World Environment Day came out with an observation that the florae kingdom not only maintains the ecological balance of the planet but can also support the economic development, if used wisely. Dr M K Janardanam, a reader at the department of botany at the Goa University and well-known taxonomist, delivering a lecture on the topic observed that the plants have changed the feeding pattern of human beings and have intimately affected the evolution. "The plants have also been instrumental in changing the demography of various countries," he noted, pointing out that the British and Portuguese colonialists had arrived in India in search of trees producing spices, especially black pepper. AQUEM PANCHAYAT: Three members of the Aquem-Baixo village panchayat have sought immediate disqualification of all the four members of panchayat, who form the ruling group, for their involvement in case of misappropriation, fraud and cheating. They also demanded immediate suspension and dismissal of the panchayat secretary. Messrs Sindara Vaz, Conceicao Peixote and Luciano Vaz, who form the Opposition group in the panchayat told reporters at the Congress House that the ruling group consisting of the sarpanch, Mr Peter Vaz, Mr Satyavijay Naik, Ms Fatima Vaz and Mr Damodar Naik, had been unlawfully collecting tax (sopo) and distributing the amount among themselves. SESA OFFER: Sesa Goa Limited, which is holding 75.44 per cent of equity capital of Sesa Industries Ltd, has decided to make a voluntary offer to acquire balance 24.56 per cent shares at a price of Rs.30 per share. (GT)

NO TO PLASTIC: THE Margao Municipal Council has set the ball rolling with the plastic drive it organised on May 30 and 31 to keep Margao clean and free from plastic litter thrown around in the various wards. The plastic drive should not be an annual ritual, but should be conducted at least once a month if the MMC is serious about keeping Margao clean. This would also boost tourism in south Goa. The municipality should also take action against hawkers and vendors who mess up the streets with fruit and vegetable waste�If the Goa government intends to make Goa a paradise for tourists, then it should keep Goa clean and plastic-free to match its natural beauty. MARGAO FEAST: Unlike in the past, this year no business stalls will be allowed on the road from old market culvert and near the church square at the fail of Holy Spirit feast, which is also known as "Purumentachem fest", according to Salcete Deputy Collect/SDO Dipak Dessai.
