I well remember the Freddy Peats case. That case was reflective of another
dimension - that of the 3rd world children's being ravaged by soi-disant
missionaries under the guise of charitable work. I am sure it is not a
contagious disease, as it is hardly a physiological illness.

Australia has by no means remained unscathed - the recent resignation of our
Governor General (who once protected a pedophile bishop) is just one case in
point. Revelations, particularly within the Anglican and the Catholic churches,
have had a devastating effect on their faithful.

Speaking of the Catholic church, don't know whether you have heard of a recent
publication by 'Hugin' "O papel da igreja Catoolica na India (1498-`1640)", by
Fernanda Durao Ferreira. It is a well researched book (in my view), it has the
effect of exonerating the "Portuguese" (i.e. the civilian side of the dynamics)
for the atrocities meted out to the Indians, specially a the time of the
Inquisition, and sheaths the blame home to the Catholic Church, specifically St.
Francis Xavier and the Spanish missionaries and the clique.

The book is an "ensaio". Other particulars, should you want to try and get a
copy in Portugal, are: Composto e Impresso na Grafica 2000, Rua Sacadura
Cabral, 89-91 A - 1495-703 Cruz Quebrada. ISBN: 972-8075-838-3.

Once you obtain a copy, with your superb command of English, you would do well
to offer the publishers to translate the book. As I read it, I could not but be
fervid and livid.

Here are some of the excerpts from the back cover:

Foi o peido de desculpas pela actuao da Igreja Catlica na ndia, feito pelo
Papa Joo Paulo II aos Indiano, que, em parte, desencadeou o interesse nesta
pesquisa.

Considerado at agora tabu por investigadores e historiadores, o que existe
publicado sobre o papel da Igreja Catlica na ndia, limita-se a informao
veiculada pos essa mesma igreja e cujos autores so sacerdotes catlicos.

Neste ensaio que uma luta contra o esquecimento, a autora faz uma breve viagem
ao interior dos scs. XVI e XVII para trazer ao conhecimento do pblico lementos
duma histria mal contada at os nossos dia.

Feliz dia de Portugal.
