TO MARK STATEHOOD DAY: Several projects will be launched in Goa to commemorate the 16th Goa statehood anniversary on May 30. The Governor, Kidar Nath Sahani will inaugurate the Panaji Corporation Market at a function to be organised at 10 am. The Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar inaugurate the renovated premises of Asylum of Mapusa (Old age home) near Asilo Hospital at 9 am and the Mahiti Ghar at KTC Complex, Panaji at 11.15 am. The Union Minister of State for Surface Transport and Highways, Shripad Naik, will lay the foundation stone for the Aldona Khorjuem Bridge at 12.30 pm. RAPE VICTIM'S VERSION WILL PREVAIL: CM SAYS: The Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar today (May 20) said the police would strictly go by the version of the victim of the alleged gang-rape at Government Art College, Altinho, here, unless concrete evidence proves otherwise. Replying to queries on the gang-rape case, the chief minister said the report submitted yesterday by the five-member panel of doctors is not conclusive towards the charge of rape�Replying to specific questions Mr Parrikar claimed that his government has taken a line of investigation which is solely based on the premise that the version of the victim is true. CM URGED TO EXPEDITE PROBE: The Goa State Commission for Women met the Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar to discuss the case of the sexual assault in the Art College Campus and urged him for a sensitive and expeditious investigation in the case. The Commission impressed on the Chief Minister that character assassination of the victim should stop and personal information of the victim and her family should not be made public. (H)
COLLEGE GANG-RAPE SCENE: The Goa College of Art has always been dogged by controversy as far back as we can remember. There has always been savage infighting among the staff amidst allegations that successive principals have been political appointees�The principal however, told the Herald team that the police had not interrogated any of the faculty members or even the watchman on duty when the incident happened�In the wake of the alleged gang-rape those familiar with the college have been spreading rumours that the girl was a habitual smoker and that she was highly sociable implying that she was very popular with the boys. COMPLAINT FILED AGAINST KHALAP IN BANK CASE: The recovery officer of the Mapusa Urban Co-operative Bank, Mr Mohandas V Ramdas, has filed a complaint against the former chairman of the board of directors of the bank, Mr Ramakant D Khalap, on May 27 for allegedly entering into a criminal conspiracy with another bank official and cheating the bank to the tune of Rs 4.7 crore. The complaint is part of continued efforts by officials of the MUCB also known as Bank of Goa Ltd, Mapusa, to make recovery of loans disbursed and to put the bank back on the rails. KHALAP DENIES FRESH CHARGES: Khalap categorically denied the fresh charges made against him in a criminal complaint filed against him with the Crime Branch of Goa police. He alleged that complaint in question is a part of a deep rooted conspiracy to annihilate his unblemished social and political career spanning over more than three decades. (GT)
OPENING OF NEW CITY MARKET: The completion of the two-storey well-equipped new corporation market complex at Panjim corporation market seems to have come as a relief for the shopkeepers who were running their businesses with hardly any facilities.The nearly 435 existing vendors/shopkeepers would be shifted to phase I of the new market complex on its inauguration by the Governor, Kidar Nath Sahani on May 30. MISHAP CLAIMS ONE LIFE: A 29-year-old man from Deusua in Chinchinim succumbed to injuries when his motorcycle (GA-02-P-1559) and a Maruti van collided with each other near the Chinchinim market on Thursday evening. DySP Tony Fernandes informed that the accident occurred at about 3.50 pm. Cuncolim Police Station in-charge Manjunath Dessai who rushed to the spot said the youth, Melroy Antonio Furtado, was rushed to Hospicio hospital, here, by the same van which was involved in the accident, but the victim succumbed to injuries before his admission. HSSC EXAMS RESULTS: The results of the HSSC examinations conducted by the Goa State of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education will be declared at the conference hall of the Directorate of Education, Panaji, at 11 am today. The results will also be available on the website www.goaresults.nic.in simultaneously. (GT)
STATEHOOD UNIMPORTANT: In other States in the country Statehood Day is a major cause for celebration and jubilation. All other States which achieved State hood later and not at the time the States were first formed, regard it as day when their ethnic identity was recognised and acknowledged�Goa's elevation to Statehood was inextricably linked to the struggle to get Konkani recognised as the official language of the State. The Centre legitimately argued that the basis for the division of States was linguistic. The establishment of Konkani as the Official Language was a pre-requisite. SUPPORTERS OF GOA-MAHARASHTRA MERGER OPPOSED STATEHOOD: Reservations as regards demanding statehood for Goa were also looming their heads in various corners whenever issue arose. But those who had these inferiority complex attitude were the ones with a confused and irrational mind. 27 HURT IN KTC BUS MISHAP: As many as 27 passengers in a Kadamba Transport Corporation (KTC) bus en route to Gokarn-Karnataka were injured in a road mishap near the Bhumipurush temple at Gulem-Canacona on Thursday. Canacona police said the KTC bus (GA-01-X-0280) collided with an oncoming truck. The passengers were rushed to the Canacona Community Health Centre and 16 were discharged after treatment. The 11 passengers admitted at the hospicio Hospital have been identified as Nicolao Fernandes, Krishna Naik, Siddhesh Nowar, Vijay Nowar, Sneha Nowar, Sumangala Dessai, Saroj K Nowar, Kamlakar Nowar, Ashwini Bhat, Nayan Iregadde and Geeta Nayak. HOUSE BURGLED: Unknown culprits entered the house of Pundalik Kerkar of Gaunsavaddo, Mapusa, and committed a theft of gold ornaments valued at around Rs.60,000 and cash Rs.700. The theft occurred between 9.30 am and 11.30 am while the inmates of the house were away. (GT)
MAHITI GHARS AS STATEHOOD DAY GIFT: The secretary for Information Technology (IT), Mr Bhupinder Bhalla, said that two Mahiti Ghars or information kiosks would be opened in the state on May 30, on the occasion of the Goa Statehood Day, as a part of the e-initiatives of the government. "GoaNET, the wide area network which controls the Mahiti Ghars and links all government departments and offices will be inaugurated by the Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar," he added. FACING HARSH REALITY: The news of the alleged gang-rape of a student from the Goa College of Art is shocking. Goa seems to be fast becoming an unsafe place for women. Although I strongly condemn the incident, I feel that young girls should dress up modestly so that they do not attract the attention of anti-social elements. Today it is a common sight to see most teenage girls wearing provocative outfits which they consider fashionable. They take pride in keeping pace with the latest fashion trends. Unfortunately, this proves to be their undoing. There is a small section of the male population which views women as objects of lust. They get titillated when they see women in tight-fitting outfits, short tops and skirts and so on. These elements take advantage of women when they get an opportunity.
