GOMANT BHARATI SAMMELAN TO SHOWCASE GOA: The Gomant Bharati Sammelan will focus on four main issues education, industry, tourism and art and culture on May 31. The panelists include Secretary, Higher Education Ashwini Kumar, Sanjeev Kerkar from ICICI, Rajiv Talwar, MD and CEO of Delhi Tourism and Development Corporation and Secretary Art and Culture, Jayashree Raghuraman. Other dignitaries include General Sunith Rodrigues and Dr Manoharai Sardessai. A performance by Tomazinho Cardozo and Irene Cardozo will also be held. The seminar is expected to look at various aspects such as the present status of Goa vis-a-vis that in the year 2020, to identify the areas which need development, and resource management, whether local, national or global. It will also deliberate on the role to be played by the government in developing Goa, and the contribution which could be made by NRGs. NEW SURVEY RANKS GOA SECOND IN INFRASTRUCTURE: Goa has been ranked second only to Delhi in the country on the infrastructure development index. The ranking has been done by a nationwide survey conducted by the Economic Times-Center for Monitoring of Indian Economy (CMIE). The ET-CMIE survey finding rates Goa in the second spot and comes close on the heels of India Today analysis that ranked Goa as the countries best State. GIRLS OUTDO BOYS AGAIN: The fairer sex has knocked the boys into the shade as far as the Higher Secondary School Certificate examinations (HSSCE) results are concerned. While the overall pass percentage was 77 per cent, the pass percentage of the girls was 81.55 per cent, vis-a-vis that of the boys which was 68.71 per cent. The results of the HSSC examinations held in March-April were declared by the Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education at a press conference at the Education Department, here, on Friday. GOVT EMPLOYEES OPPOSE PAY COMMISSION: The Co-ordination Committee of Goa Government Employees affiliated to the AITUC yesterday decided to oppose the government's proposal to set up Pay Commission for all government employees and staff employed in its departments. (GT)

EMINENT GOANS TO BE HONOURED: Eight eminent Goans will be felicitated with Gomant Bharati Awards by Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar at the Gomant Bharati Sammelan to be held at Rajiv Kala Mandir, Ponda on May 31. These eminent Goans have rendered meritorious services in their individual fields, which have bought laurels not only to themselves but their homeland Goa and the country as a whole. Fr John Correia Afonso, SJ: He had a brilliant career and obtained his master degree in arts with history & economics from the University of Bombay, winning the Sir Charles Wedderburn Prize and Sir Pherozeshah Mehta Scholarship. He joined the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) in 1946 graduating in Philosophy from the Papal Seminary in Kandy (Sri Lanka) and in Theology from the Colegio Maximo in San Cugat (Spain) where he was ordained to the priesthood on July 25, 1952. GOVERNOR INAUGURATES PH I OF PANAJI CORPORATION MARKET: The Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar, said that the completion of the phase I of Panaji Corporation Market Complex is the realisation of a dream for him. "However, many projects, various works still remain to be completed," he added. The Chief Minister, while addressing the gathering during the inauguration of phase I of the Complex by the Governor, Mr Kidar Nath Sahani, said that the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC) which has been entrusted with the project, would be completing 47 other projects around the state, by the end of the next year.

RAPE CASE: CONG WANT PROBE: The Opposition Congress has come down heavily on the government for not probing into the aspect of availability of drugs on the college campus of Fine Art College where a case of alleged gang-rape was reported. The gang-rape issue was discussed by the executive committee of the GPCC and it was felt that the government had failed to curb the evil practices going round in the college campuses. (H)

KTC BUS STAND IN DISARRAY: The Kadamba transport Corporation bus stand is considered the gateway to this city (Panaji), yet is in a state of absolute disarray. The focal point for bus-borne passengers entering and leaving this city is dusty, dank and dreary. (GT)

PANJIMITES EUPHORIC ABOUT NEW COMPLEX: It was a moment of joy for Panjimites as their wish to have an organised and spacious market was finally realised today (May 30) with the opening of the Phase I of the Panjim Corporation market. Excited Panjimites housewives, children, traders thronged the premises to get a first-hand information about the new market complex. GOANET OPENED: The Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar inaugurated Goanet, the wide area network which links all government departments and offices, a Mahiti Ghar at KTC complex and a touch-screen kiosk in Collectorate, Panjim, in the presence of Shripad Naik, Union minister of state for road transport and highway, Digambar Kamat, minister for power, Francis D'Souza, minister for Information Technology and Pandurang Madkaikar, minister for transport, on May 30, commemorating the Goa statehood day celebrations. To begin with Goanet will start inter-connectivity between land record offices, RTOs and central hub at the secretariat. (H)

KHALAP GRANTED PROVISIONAL BAIL: Former Union minister, Ramakant Khalap, one of the five accused in the Mapusa Urban Co-operative Bank (MUCB) scam, on Friday was granted provisional bail by the Sessions Court, Panjim. The CID Crime Branch had registered a FIR against Khalap, along with four others three from Gujarat accusing them of duping the Mapusa Urban Co-operative Bank to the tune of Rs 4 crore. The Sessions Court today granted provisional bail to Khalap, which is valid till the next date of hearing on his application for anticipatory bail, scheduled to be held on Monday. (H)

STOP COMMERCIAL ACTIVITIES AT SCHOOL CAMPUS: The Directorate of Education has issued a new circular directing all the schools not to conduct commercial activities like selling text books, exercise books, stationery items and cloth for school uniforms, and has warned that erring schools would have to face action. The circular has also mentioned a judgement passed by the Bombay High Court, where the court has held that there should be no insistence on the part of schools regarding stationery and text books. BID TO RETRIEVE POT COSTS LIFE: An attempt to retrieve a pot from the well proved costly, when a 38-year-old man from Shetye waddo in Duler drowned in the well on Friday. Mapusa police said Mario S Colaco, a native of Verna, descended into the nearby well at about 9.45 am, in order to retrieve a pot which had fallen in the well a few days earlier. Colaco removed the pot and was coming up without the assistance of a rope, when he slipped and fell into the well. Those present above then lowered a rope to aid Colaco's climb and as Colaco was climbing up, he slipped for the second time and drowned in the well. (H)

MARGAO MUNICIPALITY BEGINS TWO-DAY PLASTIC FREE DRIVE: To avoid the chocking of drains and flooding ofroads in the coming monsoon, the Margao Muncipal Council (MMC) has taken up a two day plastic free drive from yesterday. The MMC authorities have engaged labourers and commenced gathering all the scattered plastic lying by the roadsides and drains. "We have engaged 50 labourers to make the plasticfree drive effective,"said the MMC chairperson, Ms Kamalini Poiguinkarwhile speaking to The Navhind Times. FINAL BSC, BCOM, BCA RESULTS: The results of final year BSc, BCom and BCA examinations conducted by Goa University in April this year, will be announced by University on May 31. The results will also be available on the website thyway.com/unigoa, says a press note issued here. (H)

BEYOND MEDICAL PANEL: The expert medical panel appointed by the government to go into the question of the alleged gang rape has not exonerated the six accused. The panel has only stated that at the time they examined the victim which was on Tuesday 27, ten days after the incident happened, there were no indications that there had been a gang rape. Actually even the expression 'examination' is a misnomer. This is because as far as we know none of the members of the panel actually physically examined the patient.
