COURT REJECTS BAIL PETITIONS: The II Additional Sessions Court at Panjim has rejected the bail applications of all the six accused in the alleged gang-rape of a girl of government Fine Arts college and has held that absence of rupture to the hymen did not mean that there was no rape. STOP WASHING VEHICLES, WATERING PLANTS: The State government announced a further 20 per cent cut in water supply to Ponda and Panaji areas yesterday in view of the delayed monsoon and dwindling water level in the river supplying water to Opa Water Works. GOA HOPES TO BE MINI-CANES: Currently Goa's theatres mostly lack good films to attract viewers to their sometimes bug-infested seats. Suggestively-titled films remain a major draw. But, the administration here is confident it could work to replicate a smaller version of the Cannes international film fest. Goa's delegation which recently returned from the international film festival on the French coast say they are confident "we can do it". New Delhi is seen here as seriously considering shifting away the international film festival from Delhi to Goa, possibly by 2004. (http://oherald.com/newherald/newsGN.asp?qId=811&qSec=GN&qNType=R)

BJP's HYPOCRISY! Appointing or re-appointing officers on contract basis is no more a new thing in Goa. It doesn't matter if the handicrafts officially are not doing well. The government has given GHSSIDC (situated at Neuginagar) a new managing director on a three-year contract. MARGAO SEWAGE PLANT: When former chief minister, Francisco Sardinha commissioned the 7.5 MLD sewage treatment plant at Sirvodem here on Statehood Day in 2000, hopes were raised that the long-delayed Margao Sewerage project would soon see the light of the day. It is a sheer irony that, even after three years, the plant does not even receive one MLD of sludge for treatment, indicating that the multi-crore project mooted 23 years ago to meet the sanitation needs of Margao town, is yet to reach even the half-way mark.
