The Gomant Bharati Sammelan was an excellent opportunity wasted. I could not help feeling restless sitting in the audience, being a resident Goan and I am sure the NRGs must have shared my feelings.
Too much time was wasted on presentations and too little on feedback, debate and concrete commitments. In the first place, one day is too short a time to produce anything worthwhile. One day is enough for a feel-good event to trumpet govt 'achievements' to a passive audience. That's what it ended up as. The presentations on education, tourism & culture should have been brief, allowing for more time to get the views and involvement of the non-resident Goan delegates. It was embarrasing to see the delegate-speakers getting constantly reminded that they had only two minutes to speak, like some bloody elocution competition. Govt bureaucrats were given no such limit as they yodelled on and on about their grandiose plans. There should have been clear cut projects and areas prepared and offered to the NRGs for scrutiny, where NRG skills and investment could be invited. If AP's CM Naidu had been conducting this conference, he would have cleverly campaigned, canvassed and collected crores of rupees in clear-cut concrete commitments ! Besides that,he would have ensured that the whole cabinet was present for the meet, unlike the single MLA present for this meet. This was not supposed to be just an emotional, informative and preliminary exercise. This was a great chance to interact and give and take effectively. Every delegate, if possible should have been given a chance to speak up and ask of the state and give to the state. I feel the only really excellent part of the meet was the delicious curry made of mango and sanswam and the utterly satisfying mangannem sweet dish served for lunch! --- Jose Lourenco __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
