STATE YET TO GET PRE-MONSOON SHOWERS: Pre-monsoon showers in Goa have been conspicuous by their absence this year - meteorologists put this down to absence of moisture laden south west winds, resulting in insufficient moisture in the atmosphere, and a 10 cm deficit in the rainfall experienced at this time of the year. According to K V Singh, Meteorologist, Government of India, there has to be sufficient moisture in the atmosphere for the development of convective clouds, which would then result in pre monsoon showers. Goa has moisture only upto about 2-3 kilometres in the atmosphere, while at least 5 - 6 kilometres of moisture are required. The monsoon this year is expected to break in Goa around about the middle of the second week of June. However, Mr Singh says that if the trend observed over the last couple of years continues, Goa will yet again experience below normal rainfall, unless some system develops. (H)
CM PROMISES STATE'S OVERALL DEVELOPMENT IN NEXT 2 YEARS: The Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar, who completed one year in the office on June 3, said he was pleased with the BJP-led coalition government's performance and said that the next two years would be the real time for Goa's overall development. During his total two and a half year tenure, he could manage to get a proper grip to put the messed-up things in order, he added. Talking to The Navhind Times, Mr Parrikar expressed happiness over the response of people to the government schemes irrespective of caste, creed and religion. MARGAO SEWAGE PLANT UNDERUSED: When former chief minister, Francisco Sardinha commissioned the 7.5 MLD sewage treatment plant at Sirvodem here on Statehood Day in 2000, hopes were raised that the long-delayed Margao Sewerage project would soon see the light of the day. It is a sheer irony that, even after three years, the plant does not even receive one MLD of sludge for treatment, indicating that the multi-crore project mooted 23 years ago to meet the sanitation needs of Margao town, is yet to reach even the half-way mark. And, going by the unofficial projections, the sewerage scheme is now projected to be complete in all respects by 2010 given that 60 per cent work in the densely populated southern zone is likely to take-off only this year-end or early next year.
