ENVIRONMENT NGOS FOR PONDA ON WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY. Goa's environment groups will meet in Ponda on June 5th to celebrate World Environment Day and to discuss a plan for greenways in Ponda city and to lobby for its support. The Ponda Greenways Project is being proposed by Nirmal Vishwa. Nirmal Vishwa has been working in the area of mainly environment conservation for last two decades. The group has felt that many of the issues are of such a nature that authorities like Municipality, Panchayat and various Government Departments and Government constituted bodies cannot be fully effective in solving them. The public in general or voluntary organizations working sincerely for the cause have also great limitation of resources and authority besides administrative and other weaknesses. However, if both NGOs and authorities work in co-operation with each other, results could be very good. The Government is now aware of this potential and has allotted programs of desiltation and watershed development to NGOs. The Greenways Project will ensure that resources are raised for a series of green paths that move through various parts of the town, including the banks of the Ponda nullah. These paths will enable citizens to move on foot through the city. The pathways will also be made the focus of a programme to rejuvenate the nullah, which is today a cesspool. Nirmal Vishwa has taken up the initiative to organize a people's action group with the immediate programme of green ways. It has invited all Goa's NGOs to come to Ponda on June 5th morning to assist the programme, provide support and suggest ideas. After assembling at the Zareshwar shrine near the bus stand at 8.45 a.m. the group will proceed to the venue of the meeting (Sahakari Farm at the junction of Highway bye-pass and Ponda-Khandepar road) where the project of greenways through Ponda city will be discussed and an action plan formed. The programme will terminate at 12.30 a.m. This is the first time that a state-level World Environment Day function is being focused on Ponda town.
