Before I am asked to justify the statistic, I can state that it is part of the New York Times article I posted on GoaNet yesterday, 3 June. The article also appears in the International Herald Tribune (IHT) of 4 June with a different photograph. Other excerpts from the New York Times article: In Goa, Maria de Lourdes Figueiredo de Albuquerque and her sister, Georgina are refurbishing their 1606 mansion for the paying guests they believe will soon be wending their way here through the Internet. This tropical land is dotted with 167 whitewashed Roman Catholic churches. There is a brisk business in Portuguese passports, available to anyone living here in 1961 or to their children and grandchildren. Portuguese passports are popular tickets out to coveted jobs abroad.
