This year's delayed monsoons is causing inconvenience to
        many. A few rain clouds can be seen in the skies. On
        Saturday, a friend said it had drizzled a bit around
        Mapusa and Agaciam. If the rains don't show up by
        Monday, it would be a rather dry launch to the new
        school year. One recalls our school days, which began
        with heavy monsoon showers, when the fields were rich
        with ants of various species (many seem to have got
        decimated, was it due to the excessive use of fertilizers?)

DESILTING OF 800 PONDS TO BE TAKEN UP :  MANDREKAR

Panaji:  June 7, 2003

Minister for Agriculture, Mr. Dayanand Mandrekar disclosed that the
Government will take up disilting work of about eight hundred traditional
ponds and lakes in the state of Goa and the disilting work of about 60 ponds
and lakes have been already started through organizations of farmers known
as Users Groups.

Mr. Mandrekar was speaking after distributing the cheques of first
installment of estimated cost of the disilting work of lakes to the farmers
groups at Assagao-bardez, Van-Maulinguem in Bicholim and Valpoi yesterday.

Dy. Speaker Mr. Narahari Haldankar attended the cheque distribution function
at Valpoi.

In all  nine Users group have been distributed  the cheques from North Goa. 
Last Wednesday the Minister had distributed cheques to the Users Groups of
South Goa.

Agriculture Minister also inspected the ongoing desilting works of ponds and
lakes during his visit in respective areas.

Speaking further, Mr Mandrekar said, the Government has made provision of Rs
66 Crore in the Five Year Plan for this unique Scheme and is being
implemented by Directorate of Agriculture. He said, the disilting of Ponds
and lakes will help to increase the ground water level and storage capacity
of the existing ponds which can be used for cultivation of horticulture ,
vegetable crops in the entire year.

 also called upon the farmers to take up the floriculture and vegetable
crops by utilizing available water resources and said, there is a large
scope for floriculture and vegetables crops in the state and presently we
are depending on neighbouring states to meet the market demand of those
production.

Mr. Narahari Haldankar, suggested to increase the subsidy rates on various
agriculture schemes for the benefit of farmers.

He also distributed subsidy cheques to the coconut growers on the occasion.

Mr. W.M. Khade, Director of Agriculture explained the objective of the
schemes ^'Disilting of ponds and lakes' and sought cooperation of farmers to
make the scheme successful.

Mr. P.P. Kumbhare Dy. Director of Agriculture was also present for the
cheque distribution programme.

The cheque distribution programme at Assagao was attended by Panchayat
Member Mrs. Manjula Sawant, President of Users Group Mr.Aroskar, Zonal
Agriculture Officer Mr. Olavio Fernandes, Agriculture Officer Mr. Prakash
Raut and farmers.

While the cheque distribution function at van-maulinguem was attended by
Sarpanch Mr. Chandrika Rane, Panch Mrs. Jyoti Maulingkar, ZAO, Mr. Nelson,
AO Mr. Hoble and the members of Users Group.

At Valpoi the function was held at the auditorium of Forest Department and
was attended by large number of farmers from Sattari taluka.

Mr. Desai, ZAO welcomed the gathering. While Mr. Pradeep Malik, AO proposed
a vote of thanks.

PARRIKAR TO COMMENCE AUGMENTATION OF WATER SUPPLY TO OPA WATER WORKS SUNDAY

Panaji: June 7, 2003

Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar will inaugurate tomorrow the work of
augmentation of water supply to Opa water works by pumping of water from
Selualim main canal to Kalay River. The function is scheduled at 4.30 p.m.
tomorrow i.e June 8, 2003 at Xelpem, Sanguem. Mr Fillipe Nery Rodrigues,
Minister for Water Resources, Mr Vinay Tendulkar, Minister for Forest and Mr
Vasudeo M. Gaonkar, MLA Sanguem will grace the inaugural ceremony.

It may be mentioned that  Opa water Works caters the domestic and industrial
water need for the taluka of Ponda and Tiswadi with a treatment capacity of
80 MLD which is proposed to be augmented to 120 MLD.

The requirement of Opa  Water Works is met from lifting water from Khandepar
river. Due to acute shortage faced by the Opa Water Works, the Government
has prepared a scheme for water development programme for augmenting the
water source at Opa Water Works by construction of series of thirteen
bandharas, two barrages and three M.I. Tanks in Madei River Basin and
pumping of water from Salauli Irrigation Project Canal to Kalay River at an
estimated cost of Rs.3669.00 lakhs to be taken up in three phases which will
provide water storage potential of 155 lakhs cu.m.

Out of above programme the construction of four bandharas at Signewal,
Kumbharwadi in Ponda Taluka and Matojanwada, Kodli in Sanguem Taluka are
completed. Three bandharas on Khandepar River at Okhamb, Daucond and Tatodi
and five bandharas at Biskar, Babulwada, Devanmol, Dukorkond and
Pimple-Quina in Sanguem Taluka are in progress and nearing completion.

The Salaulim Irrigation Project is situated on Salauli River at Sanguem, has
total live storage capacity of 227 Mcum, out of which 126 Mcum is reserved
for Irrigation and 10 Mcum is earmarked for drinking and industrial use, out
of which at present 40 Mcum(160 MLD) is being utilized for domestic and
industrial supply to South-Goa by P.W.D.

The scheme of augmentation of water supply to Opa Water Works by pumping
water from Salauli Irrigation Project Main Canal to Kalay River is the part
of the above programme at an estimated cost of Rs.1304.54 lakhs.

The Scheme  consist of Pumping Capacity 600 lts/sec(50 MLD); Pumps/Motor
Capacity - 4 Units of 600 HP; Transformer Capacity-1600 KVA 33/3.3 KV;
Length of Rising Main - 9.15 Kms. and Length of Gravity main-2.715 Kms.

The works have been awarded in five parts at a total cost of Rs.1065.87
