SCHOOLS RE-OPEN ON MONDAY: The director of education, Mr Ashok N P Dessai, yesterday said that all the schools in the state will re-open as scheduled on June 9, thereby laying to rest the rumours of postponement of re-opening of schools. Mr Desai has said that education department has not received any direction so far from the government with regards to postponement of re-opening of schools so far, due to non-arrival of monsoon, and that schools will re-open as scheduled on Monday. CASE AGAINST CHINESE VESSEL: The Goa police yesterday registered a case under the Marine Act against a Chinese vessel and arrested 20 of its crew members for illegalfishing in Indian waters. The vessel was now anchored off Goa coast at Mormugao. The vessel Hai Feng, belonging to Dragon Fisheries, was spotted 90 nautical miles west of Condapoor off Karnataka coast on Thursday evening. The Coast Guard ship Samar apprehended the members after they were found engaged in unauthorised and illegal transfer of fish from mechanised trawlers in high seas.(NT)

DESILTING OF 800 PONDS: The Minister for Agriculture, Mr Dayanand Mandrekar disclosed that the government will take up desilting work of about 800 traditional ponds and lakes in the state. He informed that the disilting work of about 60 ponds and lakes have been already started through organisations of farmers known as Users Group. Mr Mandrekar was speaking after distributing the cheques for the first installment of estimated cost of the disilting work of lakes to the farmers groups at Assagao-Bardez, Van-Maulinguem in Bicholim and Valpoi yesterday. He said, the disilting of ponds and lakes will help to increase the ground water level and storage capacity of the existing ponds which can be used for cultivation of horticulture, vegetable crops in the entire year. MONSOON IS HERE: With conditions becoming favourable, monsoon is likely to finally hit Kerala today or in the following two days even as rainfall activity continued in the north east spanning some more areas, weather department said yesterday. (PTI)

HIKE IN HONORARIUMS FOR ARTISTS: The Minister for Art and Culture, Mr Ramrao Dessai said that a number of Goan artistes had contributed substantially towards preservation and promotion of the local art and culture and it was the duty of the government to provide financial and other support to them&The amount of Rs 500 given to the artistes would be raised to Rs 1,250, from the financial year 2003-2004, he informed, further pointing out, In addition, the state award winning artistes would get Rs 1,600 instead of Rs 800.The Minister, later presented cheques to 119 local artistes. AUGMENTATION WORK OF OPA WATER SUPPLY: The Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar, will inaugurate the work of augmentation of water supply to Opa Water Works by pumping out water from Selaulim main canal to Kalay river on June 8, 2003 at Xelpem, Sanguem. Opa Water Works caters to the domestic and industrial water need for the taluka of Ponda and Tiswadi with a treatment capacity of 80 MLD which is proposed to be augmented to 120 MLD. The requirement of Opa Water Works is met from lifting water from Khandepar river. Due to acute shortage faced by the Opa Water Works, the government has prepared a scheme for water development programme for augmenting the water source at Opa by construction of series of thirteen bandharas, two barrages and three MI tanks in Madei river basin and pumping out of water from Salauli Irrigation Project Canal to Kalay river to be taken up in three phases which will provide water storage potential of 155 lakh cu mt. SOLID WASTE DUMPING SITES: As solid waste affects the quality of life, locating proper disposal sites for garbage is an important task, stated Mr D S Negi, Chief Secretary, government of Goa. Being a tourist destination, we need to find an immediate solution to garbage disposal,he added. Mr Negi was speaking as the chief guest at the inaugural ceremony of Keep Goa Clean,a seminar on garbage management held at the International Centre, Panaji&Based on a population statistics of about 13.5 lakh, the estimated solid waste generated in Goa will be about 675 metric tonnes with a component of 150 metric tonne from garbage generated in towns,Mr Moniz disclosed. INQUIRY INTO MILK PACKETS SALE: Denying milk packets to consumers in the morning, the delivery men of Goa Dairy are instead off-loading it in bulk to private stall owners, bread-men and others, according to residents of Mapusa. Angry residents are feeling creamed for having to later pay extra to the stall owners for the same milk. They say, commissions are involved in this malpractice. (NT)

FAILURE TO CHECK THEFT CASES: The concept of beat system introduced by the South Goa district police to check the rising crime graph has not achieved desired results as far as the theft cases are concerned. Cases of house-breaking, two-wheeler thefts have remained unchecked despite strict vigilance by the police beats&The three police sub-divisions Margao, Vasco and Quepem in South Goa district have been converted into fifty three police beats in order to make police functioning effective and ensure vigil on criminals, ex-convicts and rowdy elements. ISO CERTIFICATION: The Apex Computers and Engineering Services (ACES), Goas premier computer training academy has received ISO certification. It is the only Goa-based computer training centre to achieve this milestone. This was announced by the ACES partner, Mr Nilesh Amonkar, while addressing a press conference in the city on Friday. The ISO 9001:2000 certification was presented to ACES for providing computer education and computer related training in the state. The quality management system at ACES centres has been assessed by the KPMG Quality Registrar in accordance with the ISO 9001:2000 standard at its Panaji centre and accordingly conferred with ISO standard, Mr Amonkar said. GARBAGE SITES: North and South Goa Districts will finally have scientifically designed garbage disposal and treatment plants following the approval of two sites by the government - one in each district. The Secretary for Urban Development P Krishnamurthy who spoke to the Herald said that while North Goa would have its site near Colvale, in the South the site selected is close to Bali. The sites measure approximately over 3 lakh square metres each. (H)

VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN: The special Fact Finding Committee constituted by the Goa State Commission for Women to investigate the recent alleged gang-rape at Government Fine Arts College, will soon be recommending to the government the need for a policy on violence against women and drug abuse, within college campuses.
This committee headed by Advocate Subhalaxmi Naik has been constituted for the purpose of investigating the incident of alleged gang-rape of an 18-year old student. All five members of the committee were present, Advocate Naik, Advocate Albertina Almeida, Advocate Caroline Colaco, Pratima Kamat, a lecturer at the Goa University and Lalita Joshi, a lecturer at MES College. MOTORCYCLIST DIES: A motorcycle rider from the market yard in Belgaum died while the pillion rider was injured, when the motorcycle they were riding collided with an oncoming tipper truck at Dharbandora on Saturday evening. Ponda police said Dasharath K Chinwar was riding the motorcycle along with pillion rider Vasant Patil and were proceeding towards Belgaum, when they collided with an oncoming tipper truck. Chinwar died in the mishap, while Patil sustained injuries and was moved to the ID hospital, here. (H)

DISPROPORTIONATE ASSETS CASE: the Special Court on Saturday partly heard the arguments before filing of charge in former power minister Mauvin Godinhos disproportionate assets case. When the matter came up before the special judge yesterday, day long arguments were heard before the filing of charge along with the application for discharge&Godinho was charged with offences punishable under Sections 13 (1) (e) read with 13 (2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 for having amassed assets disproportionate to his known source of income to the tune of Rs 55,37,844 for the period from April 1, 1994 to May 16, 2001, which he could not satisfactorily account for. MINIMISE USE OF WATER: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has exhorted the people to use water to the minimum strictly as per their needs. The Chief Minister however said that there is enough water and even if the monsoons are delayed till the June, the State will be able to give uninterrupted water supply to its consumers. Presently the water being supplied is the conserved water from the 4 permanent weirs and 3 to 4 weirs of temporary nature which were constructed at Opa, last year. (H)

PROPER PLANNING: PWD secretary, Rina Ray has said that water supply engineers designing and implementing the schemes should stress on proper planning. Ray was speaking at the valedictory function of the course on project planning and Implementation organised by Indian Water Works Association Goa Centre at International Centre, Dona Paula, on Friday. Ray further said that drinking water sector has always been the top priority of government programmes. (H)

MOHIDIN TRUST FREESHIPS: Mohidin Educational and Charitable Trust has announced freeships to meritorious and financially weak students of all communities of Goa for 2003-04. A total number of 60 freeships will be disbursed to students in Arts, Science, Commerce, Engineering, Pharmacy and Medicine. Students who have scored an average 55 per cent of marks in the last examination are eligible to apply. Application forms should be collected from the office of Mohidin Auto Care Centre, Salgaocar Building, Vasco, by June 14 between 3 pm to 6 pm. The last date for submitting the applications for freeships is June 23. (H)
