The Konkan Fruit Fest will have a myriad of indigenous and introduced fruits that have naturalized in the Konkan coast of India. Six dozen varieties of mango, a dozen varieties of cashew apples, chikoos, guavas, jamuns, kokum, mangosteen, velvet apples, custard apples, sour sops, carissa (kantam), zizyphus (churna), jackfruit, pumelo and grapefruit are just some of the fruits that will be on display. Many of these fruits, fruit products, wines and fruit plants will also be on sale. Colourful dresses, folk dances and soul-stirring music will complete the festive mood. ORGANIZERS The event is being facilitated by the Botanical Society of Goa in association with the Panjim Municipal Council, the Directorate of Agriculture (Goa), Forest Department (Goa), Directorate of Horticulture (Karnataka), University of Agricultural Sciences (Dharwad) - Karnataka), Regional Fruit Research Station (Vengurla). Together they have successfully presented the Plant Utsav in November 2003. And success spurs them on to do more and to do it better than ever before. Government agencies from Goa and Karnataka, a research agency from Maharashtra and the ICAR - Goa Center as also NGOS like Goa Nurserymen�s Association, Travel & Tourism Association of Goa, Pilar Nature Farm, Horticulture Association of Goa and Agriculture Officers� Association of Goa have joined hands to make the Konkan Fruit Fest bigger and better. GROUP INTERACTIONS: The University of Agricultural Sciences - Dharwad, the ICAR - Goa, the Regional Fruit Research Station-Vengurla, the Directorate of Agriculture - Goa and the Directorate of Horticulture - Karnataka will add juice and pulp to the fruit exhibition and the fruit farmer�s group discussions. The discussions will be for exchange of ideas amongst farmers moderated by scientists and encouraged by field extension officers. Success stories will be presented for replication by other farmers in Goa and the Konkan. A Resource Book is also being released at the Konkan Fruit Fest. It is in simple, easy to read and understand format so that farmers can use the information easily and profitably. SALES: Sales at the Konkan Fruit Fest will be of six categories Out of Basket sales: Vendors selling fruit by the dozen or by the measure straight from the bamboo basket (pantem). Traditional fruit vendors and Self - Help Groups (SHGs) have been invited to participate in this section wearing their traditional attire. Fee: (sopo) Rs 50/- for 3 days. Table: top sales: Tables of 5ftx3ft will be provided to individuals and SHGS to display and sell jams, jellies, mangada, perada, sata (partially dehydrated, ready to eat products), wines, liqueurs, vinegar, crush, rings, cocktails juices and concentrates of fruits. Fee: Rs 1000/- per 3 days. Ready to serve refreshment stalls: Fruit juices, non-aerated fruit drinks, fruit salads, fruit cocktails and mocktails, tender coconut water, and neero will be available on sale. Fee: Rs10,000/- per 3 days. Promotion stalls: Manufacturers of fruit-based products will display, promote and sell their products. Fee: Rs 10,000/- per 3 days. Inputs: Inputs (manures, growth promoters, plant protection formulations) and books on fruit plant cultivation or fruit processing will also be available on sale. Fee: Rs 10,000/- per 3 days. Plant nurseries: Sale of fruit plants by registered fruit nurseries. Fee: Rs 3000/- per 3 days. ENTERTAINMENT: There will be live music in the evenings from 6 P.M to 9 P.M at the Pergola in the F.L Gomes garden. Fruit eating competitions will be the flavour of the Fest to the tip of your tongue. Tiny tots, children and adults are invited to let their hair down and enjoy participating in a fruit fashion show. Come dress like a Fruit of your choice in evenings during the Fest. Spot entries will be accepted. Costume - body paint combinations are permitted. COMPETITIONS: Entries are invited for all types of fruits from native and naturalized species of trees like mango, papaya, banana, chikoo, guava, jamun, etc. Entry forms may be collected by 01 May 2003 and the competitor advised to bring in the fruits by 10.00 A.M to the Zonal Agriculture office. Six fruits (at least three of the fruits should be ripe on 09 May 2003 for tasting) from one tree will constitute one entry. In case of jackfruit, pumelo and soursop (mamphal) two fruits will constitute one entry while in jamun, kankam/karvandam, churna, etc at least 20 fruits/berries will make one entry. The competitor should bring the fruits in a cardboard box of suitable size, neatly labeled or tagged. The Z.A.O. may please arrange to transport the entries to the venue or to inform in advance if transport is required. Please intimate regarding entry forms received up to 01 May 2003 to Miguel Braganza (email/phone) on Friday 02 May 2003. Fruits not used for judging internal quality will be returned to the competitor on 11 May at 5:00 P.M. FUN CONTESTS Fresh fruit eating contests to determine who can eat the most of fruits like mango, papaya, banana, cashew apple will be held each day. There will be a nominal entry fee and fabulous cash prizes. ENTRY FORMS Entry forms may be xeroxed. They may also be downloaded from the website www.panjim.org.
