Romel, The first thing those who were handpicked by the colonialist for further education in Europe did when they returned to Africa/Asia, was to demand independence. They did not ask for independence, they demanded it. These groups of educated people: 1) Did not represent the wishes of the magority of their people. 2) Did not have any momentum. 3) Did not have the 'consent' of the majority of the people. Yet they all achieved their goals. That is all the countries except the Portuguese colonies where independence groups had to take up arms. Portugual's African colonies had to fight long and bitter wars where the best educated died and the economy was left in shambles. The Indian invasion spared masses of Goans getting killed in a prolonged war. However, what really surprises me is that, given the fact that free and fair elections are held regulary in Goa, Goans have not yet been able to elect a local party into power. Unfortunately, it seems (to me) that in Goa, right up to this very day, their is no "momentum and surge from within Goa" for a political party that will represent local values.
