GOA AS FILM FETE VENUE A MAJOR BOON: The first Goa international film festival will in all probability be hosted in December 2004, should plans to set up the infrastructure here fructify by then. Chief Minister, Manohar Parrikar, announced that the infrastructure required will take around 15-18 months to build.Mr Parrikar claimed that earmarking Goa as the permanent venue for the film festival was a major boon for the State. He also said that the authority that manages the Cannes festival has agreed to provide the consultants for drawing up Goa's plans. The convention centre would be the focal point of the film-festival campus, he said, adding that at least six to seven multiplexes within a one-two kilometre radius will also be built. He said, several Goans were engaged in the film industry and that the project was a very Goa-oriented one. (H)
CASE AGAINST ZUWARKAR: The criminal investigation department-crime branch of the Goa police yesterday registered a case against the former Congress minister, Mr Somnath Zuwarkar for possessing disproportionate assets. The deputy inspector general of police, Mr Karnal Singh informed the reporters that when Mr Zuwarkar's residence had been raided they had recovered suspected disproportionate assets to the tune of Rs 22,88,034 lakh to his known sources of income. WHITE PAPER ON FUNDING BY EDC SINCE 1990: The Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar yesterday said that his government has decided to publish a white paper on the funding made by Economic Development Corporation to various parties from 1990 till date, which would indicate who has "looted" the corporation. Mr Parrikar told reporters that amount of Rs 180 crore advanced by the EDC to some firms was beyond recovery and he was worried about how to get this amount back. He said that these advances, along with corporate loans, were made when Mr Luizinho Faleiro was either the industries minister or the chief minister. (NT)
POLICE CUSTODY FOR MURDER ACCUSED: The two accused, Dhiraj Chari and Seby D'Souza, arrested in connection with the Tivim murder case, were today remanded to seven days police custody while the other two accused, Lloyd Sequeira and Jerome D'Souza are still absconding. The police have alerted all border check-posts and also sent wireless messages to their counterparts in other states. Meanwhile, the wife of the deceased man has arrived from Mumbai and his funeral is scheduled for tomorrow, police said. (NT)
FATAL FALL: A 40-year old carpenter, Mallapa alias Ashok Madval from Moira, died after falling down from a height while working atop the River Navigation Department workshop at Betim. Mr Madval fell down around 12.30 p.m. and was shifted to the Goa Medical College, Bambolim, but expired shortly after. (NT)
THEFT: An unknown thief stole around Rs 8000 worth of ready-made clothes from a shop near Calangute beach. According to the Calangute police inspector, Mr Harish Madkaikar, the culprit broke open the shutter to gain entry into the shop located near the statue of Bhau Bandodkar. He left behind no clues. (NT)
STATE SUPERVISORY BOARD: The government has constituted the Goa State Supervisory Board to monitor the implementation of the Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (Regulation and Prevention of Misuse) Amendment Act 2002. The Health Minister, Dr Suresh Amonkar is the ex-officio chairman of the Board, while the health secretary, Ms Rina Ray is the ex-officio vice-chairman. The director of health services, Dr Arvind Salelkar and the law secretary, Mr V P Shetye are ex-officio members. (NT)
ASSAULT CASE ACCUSED REMANDED: Two arrested by the Vasco police in connection with an assault case at Mangor Hill on June 6 have been remanded to 3-day police custody. It may be recalled that on June 6, Rajkumar Pillai and his friends, allegedly assaulted Baban Dalvi, Mehboob Shaikh, Manohar Shinde and Venkatesh Ramayya with a sword and there after fled from the scene. EIGHT HELD FOR GOLD CHAIN THEFT: The Maina-Curtorim police on Thursday arrested eight persons in connection with a theft of a gold chain. The chain is estimated to cost Rs 14,000. Although some people were interrogated, the persons who claimed to be sadhus were not found. The police has also flashed wireless messages to other police stations regarding modus operandi adopted by the accused to avoid such cases in future. (NT)
DIES AFTER FALLING INTO A WELL: Antonio Milagres Noronha (23), a resident of Borda, died after he fell into a well. It was learnt that Noronha entered the well with the help of a rope to clean it. He however fell inside as the rope got cut and drowned. Meanwhile, Anwar Kadar Saab Makandar (23) was found dead yesterday in Margao. Makandar was stated to be a resident of Batim. (NT)
MINOR GIRL RESTRAINED: A 12-year-old girl was briefly restrained by an unknown person, in what is presumed as an attempt to molest her, yesterday afternoon, while she was walking down the road near the Government quarts at St Inez. (GT)
DECOMPOSED BODY AT SULCORNA: The Quepem police yesterday recovered the decomposed body of an unknown male person at Sulcorna. Police said that body could not be identified as it is was in a totally decomposed state and therefore had to be sent to Goa Medical college (GMC) for the post-mortem. Police said that it appears that there are no in injuries to the body. (NT)
RAILWAY TICKET WILL BE DELIVERED AT HOME: Forging a step ahead from booking a ticket at a click of a mouse, now (from June 13) one can not only book, but even get the railway ticket delivered at his doorstep in Goa, using the Internet. Buying tickets through the IRCTC website would be an economically viable option compared to getting tickets from an agent. As per the proposal, the ticket would be delivered at your doorstep at minimal charge of Rs 40 per ticket for the sleeper class and Rs 60 per ticket for an upper class. Even tickets for Konkan Railway Corporation (KRC) can be booked and got delivered. The website www.irctc.co.in would be providing this facility. (NT)
VASCO HOUSEWIFE ATTEMPTS SUICIDE: A 23-year-old woman, Ms Renuka Shivanand Malgi attempted suicide by dousing herself in kerosene and lighting fire at her residence at Mangor Hill. She was immediately shifted to the Goa Medical College (GMC) Hospital, Bambolim. Doctors stated that she suffered 100 per cent burns and was critical. Renuka, it was learnt, was married for the last 3 years.(NT)
JEWELRY, CASH STOLEN: Some unknown culprits allegedly effected entry into the house of Ms Amelia Gomes from Bhomkar Residency, at Khorlim, Old Goa on the intervening night of June 10 and 11 and decamped with goods worth Rs 13,000.Ms Gomes has lodged a complaint stating that unknown culprits effected entry into her flat by removing glass of the toilet and decamped with a gold locket worth Rs 1,000, a gold finger ring worth Rs 5,000, one Titan wrist watch worth Rs 3,500 and cash Rs 3,500. LADY DIES IN ACCIDENT: Concessao Rodrigues, 43-year-old housewife from Sada, Vasco, died on Thursday after being dashed by a buffalo. Police stated that Rodrigues was travelling on a scooter with her husband when the accident occurred at Nuvem. The Maina-Curtorim police said that she suffered severe head injuries and died after being shifted to Hospicio Hospital, Margao. Her husband escaped with minor injuries. (NT)
MARKET COMPLEX AT TILAMOL: The Quepem Municipal Council yesterday decided to construct a new market complex at Tilamol at an estimated cost of Rs.23 lakh. (GT)
MIGRANTS SPURT UP MALARIAL CASES IN MARGAO: Statistics of the last four months would make one believe that all is well on the malaria front in Margao. A recent survey conducted by the health officials, however, calls for a cautious approach. The survey has found that malaria cases detected in the past are mostly "imported relapsed cases", a grim reminder that the heavy presence of migrant population, particularly at the 70-odd construction sites spread across the commercial capital do offer a perfect ground for a spurt in cases. Eighty to ninety per cent of the cases are imported ones from neigbouring Karnataka. (H)
REDUCE 75-METRE SET-BACK: The Zilla Panchayat, South, on Thursday unanimously adopted a resolution calling on the government to reduce the set-back area of the National Highways passing through Goa at the earliest. The motion, which was proposed by member Rohidas Naik, evoked strong support from the members. Asserting that maintaining a total setback of 150 meter amounts to doing injustice to the people, Naik said this provision should not be applied to a small state like Goa. (H)
ORDER ON GANG-RAPE ACCUSED BAIL APPLICATION: The Panjim Bench of the Bombay High Court on Thursday heard the arguments on the application for bail filed by Vishal Mehta, one of the accused in the alleged gang-rape of the Fine Arts student, and will pass the order on Monday. Vishal Mehta had approached the High Court asking for bail after his application, along with those of the rest of the accused had been rejected by the lower courts. The Medical Board constituted to look into the matter has opined that although there is no clinical evidence of forcible sexual intercourse, this possibility of sexual intercourse was not ruled out. The psychiatric evaluation and psychological examination has shown that the girl is suffering from acute psychosis (altered thinking and behaviour), which could have been precipitated by the use of drugs, the alleged rape, a genetic predisposition to mental illness or all these factors put together. SHARON NETS WINNER FOR GOA: Thanks to a seven-goal blitz by Shiv Shankari, Karnataka whipped Jammu and Kashmir 18-0 and stormed into the quarter-finals along with Punjab in the 11th senior national women's football tournament, in Chennai yesterdat. In another match, Goa defeated Tripura 1-0 to top Group A with a clean slate. Tripura, who required a draw, hung on bravely before going down by a solitary goal scored by Sharon Fernandes in the 56th minute. (NT)
