With the onset of the Monsoons everyone must be relieved. As previously mentioned by many on this site, more has to be done to harvest the rain water. If it rained only a little but over a longer period Goa would not have a problem as the rain water would percolate down to where it is need. Since we have such heavy down pours in Goa and India in general, it is becoming increasingly necessary to implement rain harvesting. People have water storage tanks built at great cost to harvest the water. A neat and communal solution would be to have drain pipes empty all the roof water directly into the wells. This would mean a direct injection of water into the spring system. If every house did this there would be a marked improvement in the water levels the following year - which would get better over the years.
Desalination is a non starter, Ms Zelma De Souza who works for a desalination org. in the U.A.E. mentioned this. Ms De Souza does not qualify what she does at work, Engineer, Aaccountanant.... or whatever. The oil producing countries can and are able to afford the cost of desalinated water - The flue gas they would otherwise burn is put to good use. We just could not afford to do this in Goa, it would be cost prohibitive. It is imperative on every hosue hold in Goa not to rely totally on the the PWD to supply water. it should be everyone's aim to do their part and in helping themselves they would also help the state. From an acorn an oak tree grows, the small beginnings of people opting for harvesting rain water is to be applauded and I am sure it is only a matter of time when all will be doing it as a matter of fact.
