RAINS LASH STATE: Heavy rains lashed various parts of the State as the monsoon became more active yesterday. Moderate to heavy rains are expected during the next 24 hours in isolated places. Metereologist at the Weather Observatory, Altinho, KV Singh, said that the 6.39 mm of rain had been recorded during the past 36 hours.The seasonal rainfall is 141.2 mm, a shortfall of 12 cms. DOGS GIVE MARGAO RESIDENTS SLEEPLESS NIGHTS: The ever-increasing and uncontrolled population of stray dogs in Margao has finally begun to take its toll. Not a single day passes without a dog bite being reported from the city. And, if the claims made by the Margao Urban Health Centre is any indication, than dog bites cases have definitely become a regular feature. No doubt, it is true all bites would not be by rabid dogs, but the trend suggest that the menace by strays has reached high proportions. (H)

CHURCHILL TO JOIN NCP? Former Benaulim strongman Churchill Alemao is all set to join the Nationalist Congress Party shortly, according to his close workers. Alemao is nursing ambitions of contesting the South Goa (Mormugao) Parliamentary seta in the next Lok Sobha polls as the NCP candidate. (WE-GT)

FUNDS FOR ANTI-AIDS WORK: Efforts by Goa State AIDS Control Society (GSACS) to monitor HIV/AIDS cases in the Baina red-light area and Vasco seem to have gone in the red, with some local NGOs crying hoarse over the distribution of funds which have deprived them of carrying out projects in the interest of society.Three NGOs--vasco Anti AIDS Association (VAAA), Mormugao Medical Foundation (MMF) and Desterro Eves Mahila Mandal (DEMM)--have come out against the GSACS and its mode of operation.

LAND ACQUISITION FOR ACCESS ROAD TO CORJUEM BRIDGE: The Comunidade Fraternal de Aldona (CFA) has alleged that the process of acquisition of land for the access road to the proposed Aldona-Corjuem bridge has been flawed. Speaking to Herald, CFA Attorney Gulherime Conceicao claimed that the village of Aldona is a private village and hence, it be could not be constituted as a revenue village. He stated that the land, which belongs to the Comunidade of Aldona, was auctioned out to villagers for cultivation purpose, and the Comunidade remains the sole owner of the land. Aldona Sarpanch Premanand Prabhu, who spoke to Herald a day after the foundation stone was laid for the Aldona-Corjuem bridge, admitted that the builders did not approach the panchayat for any permission to construct any structures. SADA RESIDENT FALLS FROM TREE, DIES: Manohar Vithal Gawde (46) lost his life after he fell from a banyan tree while attempting to remove leaves for vatasavitri yesterday. Gawde, a resident of Headland-Sada was stated to have fallen after he slipped due to the rains. (NT)

ANOTHER ACCUSED IN TIVIM MURDER CASE ARRESTED: The third accused Mr Jerome D'Sousa wanted in connection with the June 10 murder at Bodiem-Tivim of 60-year old, Fidelis Lobo, was arrested yesterday morning by Mapusa police. With his arrest, three of the accused are now in police custody. The Mapusa police expressed hope of nabbing the fourth accused, Mr Lloyd Sequeira shortly. (NT)

ANXIOUS MOMENTS: The appearance of the fire brigade helped end a dawn-to-afternoon drama, in which a family member, the police and the house owner tried in vain to get a couple to open the door of their room in Assonora yesterday. When the fire-fighting personnel climbed the roof of the building's first floor and began removing the tiles, the couple opened the door. A person, who had married a divorcee was residing in the rented room. It appears that his family was unaware about his whereabouts and was trying to trace him. (WE-GT)

NCP FOR THIRD FRONT TO COUNTER CONG, BJP: The Nationalist Congress party yesterday stressed the need for a third front to fight the corrupt Congress party and communal Bharatiya Janata Party. The state unit president, Dr Wilfred de Souza, addressing the party workers, asserted that a third force is the need of the hour not only for Goa but for the entire nation. (NT)

MID-TERM POLLS LIKELY: NCP state president Dr Wilfred de Souza said there was every possibility of a mid-term poll being held with the Lok Sabha elections next year. He was speaking at the inauguration of NCP's South Goa District in Margao. (WE-GT)

CHARGED FOR 'OVERTAKING' MICKKY'S CAR: Cruising along the Calangute-Candolim road last week, the muscular hunk in chief minister Manohar Parrikar's cabinet, found it rather unsporting after one Joe overtook his black luxury car, which serves as Mr Pacheco's official carriage. It may be recalled that Mr Pacheco had made a splash last year, after he allegedly assaulted a KTC driver near the Panjim bus stand after the bus slightly rammed his car. (H)

RS.8.64 CRORE FOR MAPUSA'S DEVELOPMENT: A total of around Rs 8.64 crore would be utilised towards development works of roads, water supply and improvement of buildings in Mapusa. This was announced yesterday by the Minister for Law and Mapusa MLA, Mr Francis D'Souza, in a development stock-taking exercise of his constituency. Work of the new Khorlim-bypass road should start by October. The estimated cost of the road is Rs 119 lakh, said Mr D'Souza. (NT)

DOCU-DRAMA ON SHENOI GOEMBAB: Projects like documentation on the life of Konkani stalwarts if seriously taken up will help popularising Konkani language among the masses, stated the Information and Technology Minister, Mr Francisco D'Souza. He appreciated Goa Konkani Akademi (GKA) for taking up various projects in hand seriously and added that it would help in the long run for the upliftment of Konkani language. Mr D'Souza was speaking as a chief guest at the release of docudrama on the life on Shenoi Goembab and at the presentation of Clarissa Vaz e Morenas Konkani Research Fellowship, organised by Goa Konkani Akademi in the city. THEATRE PERSONALITY PASSES AWAY: Well-known theatre personality, Pandurang Marathe passed away after a brief illness at the Goa Medical College (GMC), Bambolim late last night (June 12). He is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter. Marathe was very active in Marathi theatre in Goa for the last 20 years and had won several awards for direction at Kala Academy's theatre festival. The former secretary of Gomantak Marathi Academy, Mr Marathe has also acted in the Marathi tele-film Vadhacharka and Bhumika. (NT)

REVOLUTION DAY PROGRAMME: The Power Minister, Mr Digambar Kamat, will unfurl the national tri-colour, take the salute and inspect the guard of honour at the Goa Revolution Day parade to be held at Lohia Maidan, Margao, on June 18. A meeting to chalk out and finalise the programme for the district level celebration was held under the chairmanship of Mr J B Singh, collector and district magistrate, South Goa at Margao recently. It was stated that as many as 500 children from various high schools of Margao will participate in prabhat pheri, which will start from Margao municipal building and after wending its way through the city will converge at Lohia Maidan. BRITISHER HELD FOR 'BURGLARY': A Britisher has been arrested by the Calangute police for burglary. The police have attached 15 odd pairs of shorts from his possession, which they claim is stolen property and seized also a paltry Rs.92 in loose change. Police claim that the foreigner Warren Canary had burgled a shop onwed by Prabhakar Simepurushkar in Calangute. (H)

ON INADEQUATE REMUNERATION: "I am living in Goa for the last couple of years and am employed in a reputed public limited company. Indeed, every Goan will agree that Goa is an expensive place to live in. In this situation, our monthly salary is so paltry that I feel ashamed to express it. It is absolutely ridiculous that the remuneration paid to an office employee is somewhere around Rs 2000-2500 or so per month. SAG'S GRANT TO FOOTBALL CLUBS: The sports minister, Mr Mickey Pacheco, yesterday disclosed that he had obtained Chief Minister Mr Manohar Parrikar's approval for distribution of over Rs 1.5 crore earmarked for National Football League (NFL) clubs, amongst all the football clubs without discrimination. He was addressing a meeting of all football clubs registered with the GFA convened by him under the banner of SAG. Small clubs, clubs at the grass root level will be given financial assistance depending on their performance. Why should funds be given only to commercial clubs, he questioned. (NT)

CHAITANYA CHOWGULE SAILS INTO HISTORY: With two national titles in his kitty within a span of a week, Chaitanya Chowgule has emerged as a bright new prospect for the Goa Yachting Association. Chaitanya clinched double crown in optimist class sailing, first winning the coastal nationals in Mumbai and then going on to bag the inland title in Pune. This meant that the baby-faced Goan sailed his way into history, becoming the first Goan sailor to hold both titles in the optimist class in the same year. (NT)

CHINCHINIM UP: CRC Chinchinim got the better of ICSC Paroda 2-1 to move into the quarter-finals of 11th Alvernaz soccer at St John de Baptist grounds, Benaulim. Chinchinim scored through Vollan DCosta (23rd minute) and Domingo Rebello (25th minute). ICSC reduced the margin through Rosario Carvalho. (NT)
