EDUARDO CRIES FOUL OVER FUNDS FOR MPLADS: Goas Rajya Sabha member, Eduardo Faleiro, today accused the Manohar Parrikar-led government of indulging in "corrupt practices" in the release of funds for works executed under the MP's Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS). Addressing a news conference here, Mr Faleiro questioned the logic behind adopting a process that involves depositing funds in the State treasury as against the earlier practice of keeping the money in nationalised banks under the rules governing the scheme. RECOVERED FROM DEFAULTER: "It is the Bharatiya Janata Party government which has succeeded in recovering Rs.1.68 crore which was granted to a Colva-based hotelier by the Congress government between the years 1993-96 despite the hotelier being a serious defaulter," said Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar yesterday. FAKE BENEFICIARIES: The state government has decided to conduct house-to-house survey against the beneficiaries of the Dayanand Social Security Scheme (DSSS) to verify manipulations, if any for availing the benefit of the scheme. Briefing reporters after the cabinet meeting, the Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar said that the government found some manipulations in the information supplied by the beneficiaries and hence it was decided to conduct the survey to verify the facts. BAIL REJECTED: The Panjim bench of the Bombay High Court has rejected the bail application filed by Vishal Mehta, one of the accused in the alleged gang rape of the Fine Arts student within the Fine Arts college premises at Altinho. (H)

RESERVED SSC RESULTS: The Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education on Monday informed the Panjim Bench of the Bombay High Court that the committee appointed to look into the paper leakage issue would decide whether or not to declare the results by the coming Saturday. Four students of Holy Family School, Alto Porvorim, Gaurish Govekar (Maina), Vernon Fernandes (Sangolda), Darshana Dukle (Alto Porvorim) and Ashwin Sanguelkar have approached the High Court challenging the act of the Goa Board to withhold their results of the SSC examination held in March 2003. RELIEF FOR TAXI VEHICLES: The State government has framed a scheme for replacement and procurement of new yellow/black motor cycles, yellow/black auto rickshaws and yellow/black taxis. The scheme intends to support small scale self employed vulnerable section of society and to ensure that old, unsafe and polluting passenger transport vehicles are removed from the roads to protect environment and to enhance road safety. APPROACH ROADS TO UGUEM BRIDGE GIVE WAY: Construction of roads and bridges in a record time does not always imply quality work and this seems to apply to the present condition of the Uguem bridge. The bridge was constructed in a record time of four months and barely 16 days after the inauguration ceremony, the approach roads from both ends of the bridge gave way early Monday morning, causing panic among residents in the vicinity of Uguem village. "Approach roads giving way is a normal thing and this happens in many cases on account of the flow of monsoon water. There is nothing to worry about the bridge and the bridge is firm in its footing," explained the engineer. (H)

MARATHI PREFERRED: The noted educationist and administrator of the Vidya Bharati, an educational institution managing 82 schools in the state, Prof Subhash Velingkar, said that there was more demand for opening Marathi schools in the state, at the primary level, compared to the Konkani schools. "However, English medium schools are more preferred than the primary schools imparting education in both the vernacular languages," he added. Prof Velingkar, who earlier released Ghatak Rajyachyo Kellyo Bhoyo Bhoyo, Aatan Tari Thartalyo Vhay, a compilation of political and social articles by Mr Datta Nayak, in the city. (NT)

SCIENCE GETS TOP PRIORITY: Records at the education department indicate that the craze and scramble for admissions for the science stream at Std. XI is resulting in a major setback for institutions offering arts and commerce within the state of Goa. According to statistics, from a total of 8518 students who sought admissions for Std. XI last year in the South, North and Central zones, around 80 per cent enrolled for Science while the balance reluctantly opted either for Commerce, Vocational and Arts. (H)

DELHI COUPLE ROBBED: A tourist couple from Delhi was robbed of a laptop and a camera worth Rs 1.20 lakh, packed in two different bags, at the busiest 18th June Road of the city, yesterday afternoon. A complaint in this regard has been lodged by Mr Sambhit Mahopatra with the Panaji town police stating that the valuables were stolen from their briefcases kept in their Maruti car. (NT)

BODIES FOUND IN MAPUSA: Mapusa police patrol van picked up a 60-year old lady who had fallen at the Kadamba bus stand at around 7 p.m. on Sunday. She was admitted to the Asilo Hospital, Mapusa, where she expired at around 10.30 am yesterday. In another case, an unidentified body of a woman, aged about 43, was found lying on the roadside pavement near Braganza building, Mapusa at 10 a.m. yesterday. The Mapusa police said the woman was medium built, wheatish complexioned and had a maroon striped sari and a green blouse on her body. (NT)

WOMAN MURDERED: A young woman was brutally murdered by an unidentified person in her house in a busy area near the convent school at Cacora yesterday morning. The murderer took away gold ornaments and cash from the house. The victim, Shobha Syam Wadkar, 33, was alone at home. (GT)

BODY FOUND: An unknown male body was recovered by the Railway police at Seraulim railway track yesterday. According to the Railway police, the youth was wearing a blue colour shirt and white trousers. The police suspect that the youth must have committed suicide as the body was found separated from the head. (NT)

ASSAULTED WITH SWORDS: Three men yesterday assaulted one Paul de Cruz from Chicholem-Bhatulem with swords and dandas near Bank of India, Taleigao. Mr Cruz received some serious injuries and has been shifted to the Goa Medical College, Bambolim. The police disclosed their names as Sanjeev Mangueshkar alias Gabbha, Kamlesh Naik and Nilesh Naik. The police have also stated that previous enmity might be the cause for the assault. (NT)

TEARFUL ADIEU TO NOTED TIATRIST: The mortal remains of the noted Konkani stage comedian, Luis Dias (35), were laid to rest at the Raia cemetery, in the presence of large crowd of mourning people, who had come to pay their last tributes to the artiste. Luis met with death in tragic circumstances on Saturday at Mumbai, just few hours before he was to board the flight to Muscat. The news about his untimely death was received with utter disbelief at his native village of Arlem, Raia, as well as by the Konkani tiatr lovers all over Goa. Luis, who fell down from a height of about 4.5 meters found himself under the balcony debris, thus getting severely injured. Three others, including a pregnant lady, were saved by the skin of the teeth. (NT)

TALPONA RESIDENTS WORRIED: Talpona residents are sitting with their fingers crossed over the issue of sea water entering their hamlet during the peak monsoon season. Located over the stretch lying in between Talpona river and sea, every household near the Talpona jetty pray that monsoon should not bring back 1983 memories, when they witnessed sea water flooding their village, destroying a house. After the failure to construct a protection wall, the villagers anticipate that the rising sea water level during peak monsoon may gush into their village housing 120-odd families. (NT)

WEST WING'S STUDIO IN GOA: With Goa being selected as the permanent venue for the International Film Festival in India (IFFI), the United States-based firm, West Wing Studio Inc, has announced the opening of production facility studio in Goa for digital conversion of the old black-and-white films into colour films. The announcement was made by the chairman of the West Wing Studio Inc, Mr Vivek Rao. The firm has patented digital colour re-mastering, digital ink paint, special FX, custom-software, hardware development, digital film restoration, 3D animation, digital media archiving, HDTV conversion and the developing and delivery of original programming.
