NEPHEW NABBED IN SHOBA MURDER CASE: The Shobha Wadkar murder mystery unfolded on Thursday with the Curchorem police finally laying their hands on her 17-year-old nephew and his accomplices, who allegedly killed the young housewife from Cacora. According to the police, Shobha was murdered by her brother-in-law's adopted son Prasad Datta Wadkar (17) with the help of his friends in order to obtain Rs.10,000 by selling her mangalsutra. (GT)
RAINS WREAK HAVOC IN PANJIM: Monsoon fury broke loose in the capital city of Panjim causing major landslides and disrupting normal life in the early hours on Friday morning. The city experienced a heavy downpour sending laterite soil of Altinho hill slope gushing down into the drains and in one case damaging two houses behind Kamat Plaza, St Inez. The worst affected area was near Maruti temple, Mala, where to major landslides enveloped the stairways of the temple and a major section of the road just below the temple caved in. (H)
GRAVITY FACTOR: A geological survey of natural resources of Goa indicates that human agency has been invariably responsible for disturbing the natural environment and weakening the slopes creating conditions favouring landslides at St Inez and Altinho hills. (H)
LIGHTNING STRIKES HOUSE IN VELIM: Two persons sustained minor injuries while four members of a family had a miraculous escape after lightning struck the house of the Pinto family at Goenchembhatt-Velim early Friday morning. (H)
STUDENT ENDS LIFE: A college student, Girish Devaru Hegde (22) of Sirsi, yesterday committed suicide because his parents failed to give him college fees for the new academic year. Girish was a Third Year BCom student of the MES College. He had asked for Rs.5000 from his father to pay the annual college fees. But due to financial constraints his father gave him only Rs.1500 assuring him that he would give the remaining within the next few days. (GT)
FRIDAY EVENING DEATHS: If police figures are to be believed, two-wheeler riders riding within the jurisdiction of Ponda police station on a Friday evening, between 5 pm and 6 pm, are more likely to be killed in a road accident than under other circumstances. A day-wise list of accidents shows that 15.4 per cent of all accidents take place on Fridays, with Mondays coming a close second at 15.09 per cent. People to rush to their work-places on Mondays and rush home to enjoy the weekend on Fridays. (GT)
TRUCK MOWS DOWN COUPLE: A couple, who were returning home to Curca from work on their two-wheeler were killed in a tragic accident yesterday evening near the KTC bus stand. The middle aged couple, Saularam Shantaram Redkar and his wife Yeshashri, died on the spot after lateral collision with a garbage truck of the Panaji Corporation. (GT)
PILLION RIDER DIES: One Girish Manohar Devari (35) from Borim, died on the spot while the rider, Tushar Parab from Pale, was seriously injured when the motorcycle on which they were traveling rammed into a minibus coming from the opposition direction at Tisk Ponda yesterday evening. (GT)
MAN COMMITS SUICIDE: One Mariano Pinto, 47, from Gonemorod, Xeldem, allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself to a cashew tree with the help of a rope. (GT)
SELF-IMMOLATION: A 20-year-old woman, Rubina Bi, allegedly burnt herself in an apartment at Rawanfond last night. Police said the deceased was taking psychiatric treatment and that she had the habit of getting wild with the family members. (H)
NAPHTA LEAK CONTINUES: The series of naphtha leakages in Vasco don't seem to end. And this time it occurred inside the compound of a bungalow "Avney Palace" at Alto-Dabolim at 1 pm. (NT)
44.08% RISE IN VEHICLES: There are an estimated 77 vehicles per kilometer in this state, according to official statistics. The population of vehicles has risen by a whopping 44.08 per cent over the past four years and continues to rise at an average rate of 25,000 vehicles per year. A total of 3.75 vehicles were registered in the state till March 2003. (GT)
BLOOD BANK TO CLOSE DOWN: Though there is shortage of blood banks in Goa inspite of the growing demand for blood in the hospitals, the 14-year-old Dr Eduardo Fonseca's blood bank in Panaji has been closed down in view of the Food and Drug Administration asking Dr Fonseca to add certain additional gadgets in the bank. USE OF LOUDSPEAKERS IN MOSQUES: Salcete's Muslim community leaders will have to decide soon on a mechanism other than a loudspeaker to communicate the traditional "Aazam", prayer call to their brethren, in line with the Noise Pollution Rules. The authorities have made it amply clear that the practice violates the Noise Pollution Rules and is even banned by the Courts. (H)
