For your Sunday Laughing Pleasure: Sussegad Goan Amcho Ben de Curtolim Figueiredo, the Goenkar par excellence, went for a convention with his secretary. They arrived in Indianapolis for their meeting, at the same time that the big Indy 500 car races were in progress. Ben had a reservation but his secretary did not confirm for two separate bed rooms. In fact they were out of luck to even get a single room in view of the Indy races in town.
Ben de Curtolim was not going to take this lightly. He made a lot of "Gad-Bad" and said a few Konkani words (or what the receptionist thought were cuss words). So finally the receptionist said the best she could do was "give them one room with two double beds". Well that was better than no room at all. After a long flight, a couple of stiff double Johnny Walkers on the rocks in true Goenkar style was in order. With the next day's meeting, Ben decided to call it a day and retired. So did the secretary in the two separate beds. Fifteen minutes into the night, the secretary said, "I am feeling cold. Could you please fetch me the blanket?" Ben said, "I have a better idea. Why don't we behave like husband and wife?" The secretary said, "That's an idea". There was a five minute silence!!! The secretary ended that pin-drop stillness by saying, "What did you have in mind?" Ben said, "Well now that we are husband and wife, why don't you get your own blanket!!!" Now is that the sussegad Goan or what? Oh, since he is a phoreign resident we will call him the laissez-faire Goenkar. This Goenkar has substituted Scotch for chao-pani. But - "sunneachim xempdi nollien ghalun ubbi zaunchinam, vancdi ti vancdi soddanch" or "Old habits die hard".
