GANG RAPE: BAIL TO FOUR ACCUSED: After nearly one month in custody, three students and the canteen contractor accused in the alleged gang-rape of a Fine Arts student were released on Saturday as there was no prima facie evidence against them while Roy Fernandes was denied bail by the Additional Sessions Court at Panjim. Shrikrishna Kalghatgi (22), Vishal Dhuri (22), Audumbar Dabholkar - canteen contractor - (50) and Norman Fernandes (22), all fine arts students were granted bail on Saturday by the Additional Sessions Court as the police have not ascertained any prima facie involvement of these four in the alleged crime, as per the judge's order. CENTRE'S HELP TO BOOST GOA'S TOURISM: The Centre will provide all help to the Goa tourism department in developing eco-tourism, conservation, restoration and preservation of heritage monuments as well as set up an international standard 18-hole golf course to attract tourists. Addressing a gathering of people connected with tourism trade and officers of various government agencies and others at "meet the industry programme" held late yesterday evening, the Union Tourism Secretary, Ms Rathi Vinay Jha, told the gathering that setting up infrastructure to hold International Film Festival of India in Goa would be a feather in the cap for the state. 150 CHARTERS LINE UP: Goa could receive some 150-odd charters from Russia next season, a market that the State began tapping from last year. Disclosing this at PATA-India's interaction with Goan tourism industry on Friday night, Mr Suryanarayana said some five Russian companies had confirmed to him their interest in sending tourists to Goa. Russian charters operated last season and encouraged by the spending capacity of the Russians, the government sent a delegation some months ago to get more flights next season. (H)

POPE HAPPY OVER RISE IN VOCATIONS: "The Holy Father remembered his visit to Goa in 1986 with great fondness. He also recalled the missionary and apostolic zeal of St Francis Xavier and Blessed Joseph Vaz in the life of the Church in Goa. The Holy Father wanted to know about the vocations in Goa and was happy to learn that there has been a rise in vocations in our archdiocese. He was also glad to know about the Goa Diocesan Synod and its implementation in the Archdiocese." (Archbishop Raul Gonsalves in an interview with Herald)

CHECK ON VEHICLES AT BORDER POSTS: Director General of Police, Seva Das, has emphasised the need to conduct thorough checking of vehicles by the police personnel at border check posts and to maintain a vigil on youngsters saying "they are more vulnerable to commit crimes." He was addressing the men in uniform at the district police headquarters here at the concluding day of a refresher course. (H)

MISSING MINOR GIRL: A 21-year old bus conductor, Prashant Agarwadekar from Nadora, Bardez, was apprehended yesterday in Thana, Mumbai, along with a minor girl from Colvale he kidnapped from Goa on June 5. According to Mapusa police, the girl is 16-year old and studying in a Mapusa college. (NT)

DHL OFFICE BURGLED: Burglars broke into the office of DHL Couriers at St Inez last night and decamped with cash worth Rs 3.10 lakh. A complaint to this effect has been lodged with the Panjim police by the manager, Paul Sequeira. (H)

ICICI BANK FRAUD: The District and Sessions Court has dismissed the anticipatory bail application filed by Armstrong Braganza of Merces, accused of duping the ICICI Bank to the tune of Rs 14,02,900. Braganza had been charged with having committed offences punishable under sections 468, 471 and 420 of the IPC, based on the allegations that he had duped the ICICI bank of Rs 14,02,900. (H)

CHILDREN REELING UNDER SHOCK: She was in the Panjim KTC bus stand when the tragedy occurred, but Smita Redkar of Curca had no knowledge about the mishap and that, the couple crushed to death were her own parents. Salvoram Redkar and his wife Yeshaswani were crushed to death after they were run over by a Panjim Municipal Corporation truck at about 6.30 pm, while they were returning home from work. Salvoram was working in the Education Department, while his wife, Yeshaswani was attached to the Garrison Engineering (Civilian Wing) in the capital city. (H)

BODIES FOUND IN RIVERS: The body of a man from Kharebhat-Chorao was found floating in the tributary of river Mandovi near Chorao on Saturday. Ganpat Babaji Govekar was reported missing since June 19. In Pernem, three bodies have been recovered by Pernem police in the last two weeks. Two bodies, identified as Shevanti Shetgaonkar of Morjim and Rajaram Gadekar of Vasco, were fished out from the Chapora river, while an unidentified body was recovered from the Terekhol river at Amere-Khajne on Thursday evening. WOMAN SUCCUMBS TO BURN INJURIES: A 40-year-old woman who had sustained burn injuries on June 2 expired at the Goa Medical College Hospital at Bambolim on Saturday. Quepem police said Chaya Prakash Mane from Tank-Ambaulim was cooking when the kerosene stove burst and she was engulfed in the flames. (H)

HILL CAVES IN AT RIBANDAR: A small hill caved in at Fondvem in Ribandar on Saturday afternoon posing a threat to a nearby house. Though there is no damage to the house at Ribandar, silt had accumulated in its compound. When reports last came in, municipal workers were at work clearing the debris. Till late evening, the work was personally supervised by the commissioner Sanjit Rodrigues and local councillor. (H)

THEY ARE RELISHED IN SALCETE: Frog chilly fry, frog masala fry and couple of others may not be a part of restaurant menu throughout the year. But when clouds burst, these delicacies are in huge demand in this coastal taluka dominated by Catholic population. The frog-related items which are unheard of by many tops the menu list in almost all restaurants here. The hot spots for these dishes are the small time and lesser known restaurants dotting the rustic village roads in Salcete. (Rupesh Samant in NT)

FROGS RESCUED IN BICHOLIM: In a frog hunt of a different kind, the Animal Rescue Squad (ARS) in association with forest department raided various places in Bicholim taluka and rescued about 50 frogs, in a bid to create awareness on the need to protect frogs. However, no complaint has been registered against those who were found catching frogs for its flesh. Speaking to Herald, ARS president Amrut Singh informed that the raids were conducted at Velguem, Navelim (Sanquelim), Surla, Mayem and Bicholim. (H)

EMU FARMING: The Emu, a large, flightless bird living in Australian grasslands may soon be reared on Goan farms if the fast-growing agro industry takes root here. A businessman from Ponda has bought a batch of 10 chicks and a pair of adult birts from Maharashtra. (WE-GT)

"VULGAR STATUE": Shiv Sena activisits hve submitted a memorandum to the Mapusa Municipal Council threatening to resort to agitation in case the statue erected in the newly constructed fountain by the Rotary Club of Mapusa city is not changed within eight days. The activities termed the statue vulgar. (WE-GT)

PROMOTION FOR FILM FEST: A Mumbai-based entertainment and media consultant has said Goa needs to be vigorously promoted as the venue for international film festival like football, even as the Zantye's have outlined plans to go for multiplexes if the government comes out with a financial package. "Goa is an ideal choice for the film festival. But, the government should promote it the way football or cricket is being done," opined Kayenn M in an informal chat with newsmen on the occassion of the opening of the renovated Cine Lata in Margao. MULTIPLEX THEATRE: Whether there is international film festival in Goa or not, but Zantye's will come up with amultiplex theatre in Panaji, provided the state government lends help. "It's not a feasible proposition, if there is no support from the local government," opined Hira Film Distributors partner, Mr Praveen Zantye. (NT)

GOEMBAB'S BIRTH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS: The 125th birth anniversary celebrations of Vaman Ragunath Varde Walaulikar (Shennoi Goembab), will be held on June 23 at a function to be held at the Conference Hall of Our Lady of Grace High School, Bicholim at 5 pm. During the function, prizes will be awarded to winners in the Konkani elocution competition to be held on the subject "I am Shennoi Goembab Speaking"; which will be held on the same day in the ancestral house of Walaulikar's where Shennoi Goembab was born. A Konkani book on Shennoi Goembab, written by Konkani author Damodar Mauzo, will be released by the chief guest during the function. (H)

CAVE, BRIDGE AT BIG FOOT: Law Minister, Francis D'Souza, recently inaugurated a cave and a bridge at the Big Foot in Loutolim. After being taken round the premises by the owner and sculptor, Maendra Alvares, the minister expressed delight in the entire project and commended the idea of a cave which leads to India's longest laterite sculpture of "Sant Mirabai" .It has the cooling effect of the water sluicing down the sides, prompting the minister to term it as "natural air-conditioning." VEG SOCIETY, ANHC EXPO: The Vegeterian Society, Goa Chapter, in collaboration with the Ayurvedic Natural Health Centre (ANHC), Saligao, organised an exhibition cum talk on nature titled 'Natures Secret of Healthy Living' at Youth Hostel, Miramar recently. The chief guest of the function was Dr V S Korikanthimath, director, ICAR - Old Goa. The exhibition featured over 50 medicinal plants most commonly found in Goa. A picturesque presentation of how man is related to nature was shown by display of colourful posters. (H)

UNEMPLOYED GRADUATES: The majority of the successful SSC students, even after being well versed with the existing employment situation in the state which shows graduates of professional courses from medicine to engineering and dentistry to pharmacy moving in search of jobs, are seen to be making a beeline for the science stream. The Directorate of Education (DoE) director, Mr Ashok Dessai talking to The Navhind Times about this trend said that the so called attraction for science stream only results in increasing the number of unemployed graduates in the state.
