MONEY PLAYED MAJOR ROLE: A magisterial inquiry probing into the escape of Xavier from the Aguada Central jail on May 3 has concluded that the convict managed to run away from the prison with full knowledge and a go-ahead signal of the jail staff. It has come to light that the convict, serving a sentence of life imprisonment, was reportedly allowed to go out of the jail to arrange money in order to grease the palms of certain jail staff for his ultimate escape. It was only after the prisoner failed to turn up till late in the evening that an impression was created that he has run away. (H) LANDSLIDE SAFETY SYSTEM: The Konkan Railway Corporation would install electric rain gauges and electronic pendulum system to monitor and detect any kind of soil movement with a view to prevent rail mishaps on the 750-km long route. KRC's managing director, B Rajaram, said that electronic devices would be installed within a period of six months and be indigenously produced at an expenditure of around Rs.6 crore. (PTI report in GT) KR TRAIN LEAVE MARGAO: For the first time in three days since Sunday's train tragedy, it was business-like at the Margao railway station yesterday (June 25) with the resumption of rail traffic on the Konkan Railway route, with the Konkankanya Express leaving Margao for Mumbai at 6 pm. (H) 19 BODIES IDENTIFIED: A total of 19 bodies of the victims of the Karwar-Mumbai special holiday train accident were identified and claimed by the relatives at the GMC morgue yesterday. In all 34 bodies were brought to the GMC yesterday while 50 passengers lost their lives. The earlier figure of 51 deaths was erroneous because of one body being counted twice in inter-hospital transfers, according to KRC officials. (GT) SOCORRO ROAD POSES GRAVE THREAT: A major road leading from Porvorim Tisk to the Socorro church has been witnessing mud slides during the past few days, posing a serious threat in the area. Residents have laid road blocks on both side of the road at Arrarim and Socorro, to caution people of the lurking danger ahead. (H) PRICES OF VEGETABLES, FISH SKY-ROCKET: On an average there has been a 100 per cent rise in the vegetable and fish prices in almost all the markets of Goa. This not an unusual phenomenon but an usual pinch felt by the vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike in the rain season. (NT) FOREST COVER HIGHEST: Though Kerala and Manipur may look green on brochures and magazines, Goa is as much greener and has increased its green cover over a period of 14 years. Goa's forest cover is 56.59 per cent which is the highest in comparison to the neighbouring States excluding those in the North East, according to the State of Forest Report 2001 submitted recently by the Forest Survey of India 2001. THREE MORE BRIDGES PLANNED: Union Minister of State for Surface Transport Shripad Naik declared at Maxem-Canacona that the foundation stone for the construction of three bridges at Maxem, Galgibaga and Talpona will be laid within three months. According to residents, the cattle was poisoned after they strayed into gardens and vegetable fields. (H) POLICY ON FROG CONSERVATION: Lack of a proper conservation policy, poaching (catching) of frogs during their breeding season, habitat disturbance due to physical and chemical factors, have been listed as the reasons for acute fall in the population of frogs in the state over the past few decades.
