We don't have to wait for an international film festival to develop a healthy film-culture in Goa. Goa produces a large number of tiatros every year. Truly , it is Goa's most successful commercial form of entertainment. Goa produces very few films. The first Konkani film was 'Mogacho Aunddo', produced by Al Jerry Braganza of Mapusa in 1950. Courageous man ! Other films like Nirmonn, Amchem Noxib and Bhuierantlo Munis followed. Today, five or six films either in the celloloid or digital format are made every year. But they are rather uninspired in script, direction and technique.Goans like the late K.Vaikunth have shone in the Hindi film industry. A few great men like Chris Perry and Frank Fernand burned bright at a time when things were pretty primitive. So why should we be content with mediocrity today ?
We need to start a little earlier with our youth, to develop an interest in making films. In the west, it is routine to use a handycam to make home movies or school projects. We are not that familiar with casual use of the cam in Goa. But HSSC,graduate and post graduate students should be encouraged to produce short films about their subject matter as the project submission format. They could use a personal handycam or rent out one, they are more easily available now. That way we would have a large number of young men and women who are familiar with the basic aspects of film-making. The next step would be to form Short Film Society chapters in major cities. This society could have regular screenings of quality short films, documentaries, full-length films, interviews, etc. They could also organise lectures/seminars/workshops on various techniques of film-making. The more advanced role of the society would be to mobilise corporate sponsorship for talented young producers/directors. With a vibrant new generation of young film-makers vying with each other to make good short films, larger projects can follow. Who knows, there might be a Kurosawa or Satyajit Ray or Spielberg gestating out there in Goa, waiting for his time to come. -- Jose Lourenco __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
