According to Amrico Cortez Pinto in his research The Famous Art of Printing, the Portuguese in the early 16th century took with them presses to Africa, Asia and Oceania.
There were numerous works printed in 8 presses four in Goa and others in Cochin, (Vaypicota, Punicale and Ambalacete, names to be translated). Books were taken to the Far East by the missionaries and were used by thousands of students who studied at the St. Pauls college in Goa. Here students from all races and kingdoms from the island of Madagascar to Japan were represented. Among the famous authors was St. Francis Xavier who wrote the Catechism of Christian Doctrine in 1557 and printed at the college of St. Paul. This book had several editions and was also called the Exposition and Symbol of Faith. Books not necessarily Catholic, Confucius was printed in 1669 and a copy can be found at the Central Library in Vienna, Austria. In Ambalacete there were several books authored by Fr. Roberto de Nobili (1673) the Grand Tamil Dictionary (1678) was published by Fr. Anto de Proena. Dictionary of the Konkani Language was published by Fr. Miguel de Almeida. Several works by Fr. Gaspar de S. Miguel in Konkani can be found at the National Library in Lisbon. Reference: A Imprensa de Macau e as Imprensas de Lngua Portuguesa no Oriente by Joo A.
