LANDSLIDE DAMAGES PORTION OF CHAPEL IN PANAJI: A landslide at the Altinho hill along the Fontainhas ward which occurred past midnight yesterday damaged the rear portion of the St Sebastian chapel. The place was used as the residence of the chapel priest, Fr Antonio Xavier. Fr Xavier, virtually shaken and recovering from the incident, said that the landslide occurred at around 2.30 am resulting in partly collapse of the wall of the rear room. (NT) BELGAUM BEEF SUPPLY TO RESUME: After a week of scarcity, supply of beef to Goa from neighbouring Belgaum is likely to resume early next week but with certain conditions. According to information, the suppliers of beef are now required to mandatorily transport the consignment in plastic crates instead of gunny bags and plastic sheets. Secondly, the consignment has to carry a doctor's certificate certifying that the meat is hygienic. This became apparent at a joint meeting of the cold storage owners and the butchers from Belgaum held here on Saturday evening. Around 15 butchers from Belgaum and the local cold storage owners attended the meet. (H) YOUTH DIES IN ROAD MISHAP: Lalit Kasturichand Barona, a 22-year-0ld youth from Kharewada, Vasco, died yesterday after his motorcycle skidded off the road as he suddenly applied brakes to avoid a collision with an oncoming Maruti Zen on the Taleigao-Santa Cruz road. (NT) MAPUSA URBAN MULTI-STATE STATUS: A resolution seeking to cancel the multi-state status of the Mapusa Urban Cooperative Bank of Goa Ltd was passed by the shareholders unanimously at its Annual General Meeting in Mapusa yesterday. (WE-GT) KRISHI GHARS MAY CURB DEPENDENCY ON BELGAUM: If krishi ghar programme of the Goa State Horticulture Corporation Ltd is successful, the dependency of Goa on Belgaum and surrounding areas for supply of vegetable and fruits to a large extent will be reduced in the next few years. (H) HUSBAND ACQUITTED: The Additional Sessions Court has acquitted Vazir Hakki of Indiranagar, Chimbel, of having set his wife afire and causing her death, partly on the grounds that the dying declaration and the reports of the oral declaration allegedly made by the deceased did not tally. The case of the prosecution was that on March 7, 2001, the accused allegedly poured kerosene on his wife Nacima Banu and set her ablaze. She sustained severe burn injuries, due to which she died on March 13. (H) UNTIMELY CULVERT CONSTRUCTION: South Goa Youth Congress general secretary and spokesman Paul Carvalho has expressed concern over the hardship to the common man, due to the untimely work of construction of a culvert undertaken near the new market at Curchorem. Carvalho stated that due to the construction of the culvert, the rain water which was flowing down the culvert got blocked and entered into the shops situated in the ground floor of nearby Rajani Pushpa building, subjecting them to heavy losses. A Doctoral degree at the Pontificium Istitutum Biblicum is a rare achievement and studies in Sacred Scriptures are considered the most demanding among ecclesiastical studies. Fr Theodore is one of the few scholars in India and only the second one in the Archdiocese of Goa to attain a PhD in Sacred Scriptures, states a press note issued by Fr Peter Raposo of the Pilar Seminary. Hence Vitorino's sudden and sad demise on 3 July brought bitter tears to the eyes of a large gathering of Konkani tiatrists, wellwishers and others who joined his relatives at St Alex's Church in Calangute yesterday (July 5) evening for his funeral. "Vitorino was one of the few well-trained actors, having completed a three-year theatre course in the Kala Academy's school of theatre. He worked in eight of my plays since the last four years. He was very sensitive, hardworking and ever ready with practical suggestions," said popular playwright Roseferns, soon after the funeral. Everyone who knew Vittorino wondered why such a cheerful, talented young man had to resort to hanging himself to end his life.
