In the 60s the UN was behind the policy of subtle removal of colonial governments around the world. It had a strong backing from the Soviet Union where the trend in those days was Socialism.
The Soviets even paid in kind (the US in similar role in Timor) to start wars against the colonial powers. Finally this kind of effort paid dividends and the colonial countries withdrew. But what are the results? Ravaged in time with civil wars, corruption, machete rule, disease and failure in governance, this is what is happening to these countries at the moment. Today thousands cross the Sahara in an attempt to get back to these once called enslavers or colonial countries to make ends meet. Many face death on the treacherous way. The last stop in Africa is Morocco than the rubber dinghy trip to Spain and the way to the UK. Under similar circumstance of forced decolonization (where banyias came to stoke the fire of disaster), democracy was quickly scrambled to cover the actions of annexation. This looks a pretty scene to the western world at large. But here again what are the results? Nothing dissimilar to Africa, with the exception of the civil wars, and the need to follow treacherous ways because the former colonizer provides the legitimate means of arrival (even those who annexed, are following the legitimate means with illegitimate documents). Should the UN and the Russians now not accept the past mistakes and come up with a rational solution such as an organization of better governance for these forced decolonized places?
