Obviously, confusion and disappointment. At the rate of five changes in an identical number of years, the BSNL has not endeared itself to its subscribers, who lose track of their friends or the usual contacts as the latter are unaware of the change. BSNL sources said the goatelecom had only one server which is connected to Mumbai and problems arose if the gateway was blocked. In comparison sancharnet.in will have four servers. (GT)
DECLINE IN ROAD ACCIDENTS: The Superintendent of Police (Traffic), Mr Appa Teli, disclosed to presspersons that the traffic police have collected a fine of Rs.88,67,050 till June 2003, as compared to Rs.43,66,730 collected during the first half of the year 2002, from the violators of various traffic rules. He said this year upto June 30, 105 persons lost their lives on roads, compared to 135 deaths during the corresponding period of the last year, a decrease in fatality rate by 22.22 per cent. Of the 105 persons killed in accidents, 53 (50.48%) were motorcyclists, who died due to head injuries. (NT) SCOOTER RIDER KILLED IN MISHAP: A 28-year-old scooter rider, Mr Sanjay Bhaskar Rane, from Defence Colony, Porvorim, was killed on the spot while the pillion rider, Mr Ramesh Shettappa Harijan, sustained serious injuries in a head-on collision between a Madras Rubber Factory bus and a Vespa Scooter on the CHOG-M Road, Porvorim, on \Saturday night. (GT) MARINE ARCHAEOLOGISTS STUMBLE ON PORTUGUESE SHIPWRECKS: Marine Archaeologists at the National Institute of Oceanography in Panjim, for the first time, stumbled upon vital evidence on Portuguese shipwrecks off Goa. The experts told UNI that recent explorations off Sunchi reef, St George's reef and other areas suggest that Goan waters offer rich potential for shipwreck archaeology. The scientists/cum-archaeologists also sought assistance from the public, particularly those conversant with the old Portuguese language and others including historians, for providing them with information on shipwrecks off Goa and other maritime states. (H) RAINWATER HARVESTING IN PANAJI: Urban historians of Goa have written about the contributions of the makers of modern Panaji city. But they had missed one point.
