Nuclear scientists, the CIA... what next? There's enough material here for a bestselling novel on Goa. More seriously, has anyone read Elwyn Chamberlain's *Gates of Fire*? Goa features in a big, if unflattering, manner in that novel. On another point: Miles and Giles, two talented musicians and Chris Perry's sons, are to be excluded because they haven't recorded anything great in Konkani. The people from Bombay 400002 are similarly kept out for a reason most of us haven't quite understood -- probably they don't realise how grateful they have to be to the Portuguese for colonising their land, civilizing them, and sending off their ancestors to other regions just to survive and earn a living. In the early 20th century, Goans (I'm talking about Catholics here, though this has been true of Hindus too, in other ways) have been excluding each other on the basis of ethnicity -- aka caste. I don't just mean the snobbish (almost racist) approach of the 'upper' castes looking down on the so-called 'lower' castes, but also the legendary Brahmin-Chardo disputes that dissipated a lot of creative energies and set Goa back by some decades if not centuries. So we keep excluding people. On various grounds. On the basis of the languages they speak or don't. On the place of their birth. On ethnicity. On class or education. On region and religion. So who's left? Just a small clique of "Goans", conveniently-defined so as to allow us come across as big frogs in a small pond? I think this approach is shallow and unfit to take the bulk of Goans or Goa ahead into the 21st century.
