Though the rain Gods have been more than benevolent to the State, the government seems to be struggling to ensure regular water supply to its citizens.
Residents in Cunchelim, Mapusa continue to receive water supply on alternate days and for a "few hours" despite the wet spell. "The rationing of water resorted by the Water Department in summer is still on," complained an aggrieved resident from Cunchelim which comes under ward no 1 of the Mapusa Municipal Council.
The travails of the residents may well go on for yet another month if the information supplied by the officials in the Mapusa Water Department are of any indication.
According to the Junior Engineer A K Sadanand, attached to the Water Department, Mapusa, it will take more than a month to supply regular water supply to this part of Mapusa.
Admitting that some residents have complained to the department, Mr Sadanand disclosed that the old pipeline which supplies water to Cunchelim was not "adequate", if one took into account the requirements of the village.
"The new pipeline with a larger diameter from Assonora to Porvorim will supply water to Porvorim and all enroute villages," he said. "The pipeline has already been commissioned and we are taking up cases one at a time," he added.
What has peeved the residents in Cunchelim are some irresponsible statements made by politicians in the media and the media's keenness to lap it up.
It may be recalled that the Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar had recently announced in Mapusa (May 29, 2003) that after the commissioning of the Padosem water supply scheme residents in Mapusa would get 12-hour regular water supply within days. He had also stated that 24-hour water supply could soon be a reality in the city.
Later (in June) Law Minister and Mapusa MLA Francis D' Souza listed various
measures taken by the government to augment water supply in the constituency.
"If conditions in the municipal limits are so bad one can well imagine the state
in the villages," a resident observed.
