CM JUSTIFIES NEED FOR OPA AIRPORT: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar yesterday justified the need for Goa as an international tourist destination, to have two airports and also stated that a super-educational complex is on the anvil. Pointing out that the Dabolim airport takes the traffic of 13-14 flights everyday, he said as per indications available, the airport would be "flooded" next year with passengers. (H) TRAFFIC CHAOS IN CURCHOREM: In Curchorem city, problems start right at the gateway. A canal under construction blocks the flow of heavy traffic into Curchorem and a muddy katcha road is all that is left. The city itself is in chaos. Problems are compounded by the fact that the traffic police and the municipality are in deep slumber. Shopkeepers have encroached on footpaths. (GT) MGP'S DHAVLIKAR TOO APSIRES TO JOIN BJP: The PWD Minister, Mr Ramkrishna Dhavlikar, yesterday said that if the infighting within the MGP did not end within 6 months he would have to think of joining the BJP. He is the second MGP legislator hinting at joining the BJP after Transport Minister, Mr Pandurang Madkaikar, yesterday said that he had started consulting his supporters for joining the BJP. (NT) "I WILL NOT LEAVE UGDP": Leaders of the United Goans Democratic Party yesterday variously reacted to the reported move about the Town and Country Planning Minister, Mr Atanasio Monserrate, joining the BJP. UGDP vice president, Mr Radharao Gracias, expressed ignorance of a possible split in the party.Cortalim MLA Mathany Saldanha emphasized that come what may he would not leave the UGDP. (NT) RS.52 CRORE FOR GENERATING EMPLOYMENT: CM Parrikar on Friday announced that his government has made a provision of Rs.52 crore for generating employment tin the State. "In the next two years, the government has planned several employment generating schemes, so that by the end of 2006, unemployment will see a steep fall," informed the chief minister while addressing party workers at Parra. (H) MAN HANGS TO DEATH: Savlo Gokuldas Halarnkar, a 27-year-old man from Canturli-Camurlim, committed suicide by hanging himself to a coconut tree on Friday morning. (H) CHODPDEM-KERI ROAD: Mandrem MLA and BJP Goa unit President Laxmikant Parsekar has said that Rs.3.5 crore has been earmarked for widening of the Chopdem-Keri road and that the second phase of the work would start within 15 days. (H) THE POWER ACT: The Electricity Act 2003 is a fantastic piece of legislation but the loose ends need to be tied quickly by the government so that the benefits mentioned in the Act are accrued by society and industry. The High Court observed that the prosecution had failed to prove the case beyond doubt. According to the proposal, the GMC would run Pay Clinics at its Bambolim complex in the evening hours where its doctors would conduct private practice and the fees accrued would be distributed between the doctors, GMC, the nurses and support staff. Many two-wheeler owners, who had parked their vehicles heaved a sight of relief as the tree fell in the compound of the Azad Maidan and not on the road. (NT) A GERMAN FOUND DEAD: A 45-year-old German national, Andrea Bohner, was found dead in an abandoned house at Maddavaddo, Calangute, on Wednesday. She had been booked by the police in 2001 for over-staying without possessing valid documents. (GT) MODEL FARM AT RAJ BHAVAN: With a view to motivate the people and improve the employment and economic scenario in the state, Governor Kidar Nath Sahani has initiated a project of setting up a model farm at the Raj Bhavan campus, where vegetables, flower plants, medicinal plants and various species of valuable fruit-bearing and other trees will be cultivated/planted. (NT) TO EXPLOIT ORCHID POTENTIAL: Orchid cultivation in the State is poised for a major take-off with the Goa State Horticulture Corporation gearing up to exploit the potential of orchid plantation in the State. 20 farmers interested in orchid cultivation would be sent to Kerala for training. Plans are afoot to promote orchid cultivation on commercial scale as climatic conditions in Goa are favourable for the growth of orchids, according to the Managing Director of Goa State Horticulture Corporation, SSP Tendulkar. (H) 20 MALARIA CASES WITHIN TWO DAYS: A large number of malaria cases have been reported at the Hospicio Hospital, Margao, during the last few days, even as the State government was taking all measures to combat the disease.
