ADVANCES IN ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE
A 'must read' book for environmentalists, researchers and policymakers and a helpful guide to under-graduate students of life sciences, botany and zoology is the recently released publication,"Recent Advances in Environmental Science" edited by Dr.K.G.Hiremath and published by Discovery Publishing House,Delhi. The book covers a wide range of topics on terrestrial and aquatic(freshwater, estuarine and marine) environments through papers written by researchers in each field of study. So you have Manoj Borkar from Borim(lecturer in Zoology at Carmel College,Nuvem) writing about the muggers of Goa. No, not the ones that you may encounter in a dark alley: He writes about his pet subject, the crocodiles. Sonali Borges from Curtorim and Dr.A.Shanbag, her Ph.D guide in ornithology at Goa University, write about the 117 types of birds they saw at Carambolim lake.tHIS LAKE IS PRESENTLY THE SUBJECT MATTER OF A WRIT PIL before the Goa Bench of the Bombay High Court(Coram Justice Ferdinand Rebello and Justice Hardas) v/s Govt of Goa represented by the Departments of Agriculture,Forests,Revenue and Water Resources. That aside, Dr.Bernard Rodrigues (Reader in Botany at Goa University)Sharda Waman Khade,Mehtab Bukhari (lecturer at Govt.College,Quepem) and two other researchers have written about the role of fungi( VAM/AM) in re-vegetation of iron ore rejection dumps. It may be surprising to know that the growth of the rain tree, gulmohur, tamarind and mangium teak more than doubled (over untreated 'control' plants) when innoculated with the fungus Glomus mossae and grown on mining rejects. The experiment,if I remember correctly, was laid out in the DST&E-funded glasshouse at Goa University. There is a paper on mangroves by the Secretary of the Mangrove Society of Goa and Immediate Past President of BSG,Dr.A.G.Untawale who has lived and worked in Goa from 1969. Mangroves are a hot topic in Mumbai where large-scale felling of these trees(no relatives of mangoes) for a golf course are now part of a lawsuit. Getiing a little deeper into the water,Dr. Yasmin Modassir(Vice-Principal of Dhempe College) tells you all about oysters and mussels(xinaneo). Dr. Baban Ingole from NIO,Dona Paula, writes about clams(khubeh ani tisreo). Don't eat them during the rains, they accumulate all the dirt and the germs washed down from the gutters into the rivers. The above book was released at a simple function at Dhempe College of Arts & Science recently by Shrinivas Dempo. Recommended for HSS and College libraries and environmental institutions.
