----------------------------------------------------------------------- Documented by Goa Desc Documentation Service & circulated by Goa Civic & Consumer Action Network (GOA CAN)<[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Ph:2252660 ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------ Anjana murder suspect cries of police harassment ------------------------------------------------------------------ He is one of the two 'hottest' suspects in the Anjana Shirodkar murder case. According to transcripts of cellular phone calls exchanged between the deceased and Rajesh Bandodkar available with the North District police, the latter also has the most number of long duration calls logged, which according to the police is one of the causes of suspicion.
Speaking to Herald, Rajesh Bandodkar, who recently attempted to commit suicide by consuming Rattol, claims that constant police harassment had "disturbed" his life and that it was in desperation, that he tried to commit suicide.
"She used to phone me time and again and was a good friend of mine. I could never think of taking away her life," insisted Rajesh. Incidentally, Rajesh has earlier been hired by former minister and present MLA Subhash Shirodkar as a driver. "I have even stopped any contact with him. I have done this, only to avoid his name from possibly being tarnished in the media," claims Rajesh.
Rajesh is currently under observation at the Goa Medical College, Bambolim, since his attempt to commit suicide on July 7. Rajesh's close relative Premanand Kothambikar who was also present at the hospital, claimed, that the police had "picked up" Rajesh at least 20 times from his residence in Shiroda and had even used third degree methods on him, a claim which the police rubbish.
"The murder case is being politicised. Anjana Shirodkar's death is certainly tragic and the culprits should be punished. Innocents should not be victimised," insists Premanand Kothambikar, a close relative of Rajesh, speaking to Herald.
He also alleged that since the incident took place, another suspect Shrikant Naik, had also been 'lifted' from Shiroda, a similar 20 times. "Despite these measures, police could get nothing out of him. The police claims that Rajesh spoke to Anjana over the mobile phone. But is this proof of involvement in the murder," queries Kothambikar.
He also claims, that Rajesh was at his residence during the murder, a fact he claims "reputed" people were ready to vouch for. Police however claim, that Rajesh has evaded vital questions during the "enquiry" sessions. "Unless he gives us satisfactory and correct answers, we will have to call him," a senior police officer informed. -------------------------------------- HERALD 14/7/03 page 1 --------------------------------------
